YOUTH FOR PEACE: CHOOSING DIALOGUE OVER VIOLENCE

Community Safety Initiative โ€“ Kenya (CSI-Kenya), through the Resilience, Peace and Stability (RPS) Programme, with support from Embassy of Denmark in Kenya and Somalia through Act Change Transform is promoting peaceful conflict resolution and responsible youth engagement across Samburu and Laikipia counties.

Through sensitization of local youth on non-violent means of conflict resolution through peace campaigns and caravans, the initiative brings together local youth and inter-community youth leaders to strengthen their capacity to manage tensions peacefully, resist incitement, challenge misinformation, and discourage violence within their communities.

Recognizing young people as important agents of change, the programme encourages them to use their voices and influence to build bridges across communities, promote tolerance, and resolve disagreements through dialogue rather than confrontation.

As communities approach the electoral period, young people are encouraged to respect differing opinions, engage responsibly, and safeguard peaceful coexistence.

โœจ OUR MESSAGE IS CLEAR:

๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ Choose dialogue, not violence.

๐Ÿค Different opinions, one community.

๐Ÿ“ข Reject incitement and misinformation.

๐Ÿ’š Be a peace ambassador wherever you are.

Peace begins with us. Our voices should unite communities, not divide them.

In conflict-prone borderland communities, where competition over resources, insecurity, and inter-community tensions can threaten peaceful coexistence, creating spaces for women to lead peace dialogue is essential.

CSI Kenya facilitated women-led peace dialogue forums in Lmisigiyoi, Samburu Central, and Lpiguan, Laikipia North ,bringing women together to discuss peace and security concerns, identify key conflict drivers, and explore locally led solutions.

The forums provided safe and inclusive spaces for women to lead conversations on issues affecting their communities. Women took on active roles as agenda setters, moderators, and mediators, demonstrating their capacity to influence community-level peace processes.

Discussions focused on challenges including competition over grazing land and water, insecurity, and inter-community tensions ,while highlighting the importance of sustained dialogue, cooperation, and early action to prevent tensions from escalating into violence.

The dialogues strengthened womenโ€™s visibility, confidence, participation, and legitimacy as peace actors, while reinforcing their role in conflict prevention, reconciliation, and social cohesion.

With support from Embassy of Denmark in Kenya and Somalia and in partnership with Act Change Transform CSI-Kenya has established a Women-Led WPD Project Steering Committee under the SABALA Network.

The Committee brings together women peacebuilders from Samburu, Baringo and Laikipia, alongside representatives from women-led CSOs and community leaders.

The Committee will provide strategic guidance and oversight for the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Programme, champion conflict sensitivity and Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI), and meet quarterly to review progress, identify emerging risks and inform adaptive action.

This marks an important milestone in institutionalizing womenโ€™s leadership in peacebuilding and ensuring that women are not only participants, but are at the centre of peace and security decision-making.

When women lead, peace processes become more inclusive, responsive and sustainable.

In many pastoralist communities, women have historically been excluded from peace processes, despite their critical role in preventing and managing conflict.

As part of this effort, CSI -Kenya is proud to have trained 100 women drawn from pastoralists communities, informal settlements and conflict-prone border areas of Laikipia North and Samburu Central sub-counties on conflict mediation.
To translate these skills into action, Women-Led Mediation Teamsโ€”SASOKIโ€”were established in both counties. The teams will apply their newly acquired skills within ongoing community peace processes and support efforts to address emerging conflicts.
This milestone strengthens womenโ€™s confidence, credibility, and leadership as peace actors, while contributing to more inclusive and community-led approaches to peacebuilding.

Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) remains a significant challenge affecting women and girls, particularly where access to information, justice, and support services is limited.
As part of the Women ,Peace and Security (WPS) Program ,and with support from the Embassy of Denmark in Kenya and Somalia through Act Change Transform , CSI -Kenya conducted a two-day training on SGBV prevention and response for women leaders and community members in Loogorate, Samburu County, and Mowuarak, Laikipia County.
The training was facilitated by a Gender Officer from the State Department for Gender and Affirmative Action, who equipped participants with practical knowledge on SGBV prevention, survivor-centred response, reporting mechanisms, and psychosocial first aid.Gender Desk Officers from Maralal and Mowuarak police stations also engaged participants on SGBV referral pathways, including how survivors can access appropriate protection, health, legal, and justice services.
The training moved beyond knowledge-sharing to action, with participants developing action plans to become SGBV prevention champions in their communities. They committed to using spaces such as schools, harambees, and womenโ€™s Chamas to raise awareness, promote reporting, and share information on available support services.
Through this initiative, CSI-K is strengthening womenโ€™s capacity to prevent, report, and appropriately refer SGBV cases while fostering stronger community protection and collaboration with duty bearers.

On 23rd June 2026, through the support of the Royal Danish Embassy in Kenya Embassy of Denmark in Kenya and Somalia and our National Partner Act Change Transform CSI Kenya implemented the Resilient Peace and Stability Program's activity targeting Sub-County elections Multi-Stakeholders at the Assistant County Commissionerโ€™s Hall in Kirimon Division, Posta, Laikipia North. This engagement is part of CSI Kenyaโ€™s broader strategy to strengthen community resilience and social cohesion for peaceful 2027 elections. As the country begins preparations for the next general election, this phase is particularly critical. Lessons from successive election cycles in Kenya show that in cosmopolitan counties like Laikipia, political competition often takes on ethnic dimensions. That makes timely electoral conflict prevention essential. These engagements are therefore key to building synergies and shaping a common direction for peace.

The forum brought together diverse actors whose roles directly shape the security and political environment at sub-county level. Participants included officers from the National Police Service, National Police Reservists, political aspirants, representatives of community ranches, faith-based organizations, inter-community elders, women leaders, and community members. This mix ensured that both state and non-state actors share perspectives and align on a common approach to peace. Discussions focused on the current political context, emerging narratives, and local dynamics that could escalate if left unaddressed. A key area of consensus was the shared responsibility of all stakeholders to promote timely and accurate information sharing to counter misinformation during the election period, with specific emphasis on a few identified hotspots in Laikipia North.
