Meru county commemorated Global Handwashing Day today with Public Health Director John Inanga presiding over the ceremony on behalf of H.E. Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia. The event brought together public health stakeholders and community members to promote proper handwashing, improved sanitation, and preventive healthcare as key pillars in safeguarding the health and well being of Meru residents.
‎
‎A key highlight of the commemoration was the official declaration and certification of Dodoma and Kongoacheke villages in Kambakia as Open Defecation Free (ODF). This achievement brings the total number of villages in Meru county certified as having attained 100 percent ODF status to 51, marking continued progress in the county government’s efforts to promote safe sanitation and protect communities from preventable diseases.
‎
‎Director Inanga underscored the importance of investing in preventive healthcare, noting that a stronger focus on prevention could address more than 70 percent of the county’s disease burden. He observed that prioritizing preventive interventions would improve the residents' quality of life while reducing the resources spent on treating preventable illnesses. He noted that resources saved through effective disease prevention could be redirected towards development and transformational endeavors, supporting the county government’s development agenda and improving service delivery.
‎
‎Area residents and other attendees also benefited from free eye screening and treatment including the provision of reading glasses to patients diagnosed with presbyopia, an age related condition that affects the ability to focus on nearby objects. In addition, participants received practical demonstrations on proper handwashing techniques, reinforcing the importance of washing hands correctly and consistently as a simple yet effective measure of preventing the spread of infections.
