Did you know that in many small-scale fisheries, not all harvested fish reach the consumer due to risks in the entire value chain?
Post-harvest loss isn't just a waste of food; itโ€™s also a waste of labor, water, and precious aquatic resources. It undermines the livelihoods of millions and threatens regional food and nutrition security.

As we head toward the 3rd Aquatic Resources & Blue Economy Conference (ARBEC III) in Nairobi, Kenya, we are looking for the brightest minds to share data-driven solutions and innovative technologies to tackle this critical challenge.

Strengthening partnerships for a thriving Blue Economy ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿค
KMFRI Mombasa Headquarters had the pleasure of hosting the Coast leadership of Cooperative Bank of Kenya for a courtesy visit aimed at deepening collaboration and exploring innovative financing pathways for research and community development.

The delegation was received by the Director General, Dr. Paul O***a, where discussions centered on how financial institutions can play a transformative role in supporting research investment ideas within coastal communities. Key focus areas included building structured financing models to support communities in growing and commercializing scientific innovations, and enhancing financial inclusion through tailored solutions.

The engagement also highlighted the importance of developing a clear roadmap for collaboration, strengthening KMFRIโ€™s position as a strategic partner, and leveraging opportunities for joint initiatives such as financial literacy programs and staff capacity building.

This visit comes at a pivotal moment as Kenya prepares to host the 11th Our Ocean Conference, the first in Africa, and the upcoming 3rd Aquatic Resources & Blue Economy Conference (ARBEC III) this June and November 2026, respectively. As KMFRI continues to position itself regionally and globally, partnerships with financial institutions remain key to unlocking investments, advancing ocean science, and driving sustainable livelihoods.

Together, we are building bridges between science, finance, and community impact.

As Kenya prepares to host the 11th Our Ocean Conference, the first in Africa and on our Coast, financial institutions have a unique opportunity to position themselves at the forefront of blue bonds and sustainability linked-ocean financing.

The upcoming Science and Research Symposium, hosted by the Government of Kenya's State Department of Blue Economy and Fisheries through KMFRI, will take place from June 14 to June 15, 2026. This event will bring together 300 global experts ahead of the main conference, providing an excellent platform for visibility, co-branding, and thought leadership in climate and ocean sustainability.

Join us in partnering, sponsoring, and supporting the scientific symposium as we shape the future of ocean sustainability together.

Science in action!
Today at KMFRI, Mombasa, CEO Dr. Paul O***a welcomed the MESCAL Project team on a courtesy call.

Multiscale connectivity at species and community levels to achieve conservation goals under climate change in the Western Indian Ocean (MESCAL) is a 3-year collaboration bringing together 10 funded partners across Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, South Africa, and France.

The project is focused on exploring how Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) enhance the resilience of fish populations in a changing climate.

The KMFRI team, led by Chief Scientist Dr. Gladys Okemwa, includes a multidisciplinary group of experts: Dr. James Mwaluma (fish larval ecology), Dr. Jacob Ochiewo (socioeconomics), and Dr. Thomas Mkare (genomics). This week, they are working closely with IRDโ€™s Dr. Thomas Lamy (Project Manager) to co-develop PhD student Theo Eychenneโ€™s work and further refine the research strategy.
