KMFRI Sagana team led by the Centre Director Dr Domitila Kyule and senior Research Scientist Dr Jacob Abwao today hosted the Climate-Resilient Aquaculture systems for Africa(CASA) implementing team from Worldfish and county governments. The meeting geared towards fostering cross-county alignment, strengthening institutional coordination and securing commitment for the effective implementation of the CASA Project.
The workshop sought to provide an overview of the CASA initiative and its proposed interventions, to facilitate alignment with the county development priorities and policy frameworks, promote collaborative planning, stakeholder engagement, support formal approval and buy-in for project implementation.
KMFRI is an implementing partner in the CASA Project and the project has brought together different counties including; Kakamega, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, TharakaNithi and Meru.

As a diverse and multidisciplinary field, aquaculture offers a unique opportunity for the admitted students to gain hands-on industrial skills, practical experience, and professional exposure that complement the academic training offered by institutions of higher learning.

The week-long engagement with students, researchers, and the wider public provided a valuable platform to promote aquaculture technologies and innovations for sustainable food and nutritional security, while enhancing livelihoods through science-driven solutions.

KMFRI Kisumu Centre was delighted to host microbiology students from Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology for an educational visit.
The students gained valuable insights into KMFRIโs mandate and cutting-edge research, including visiting our laboratories where students explored advanced equipment and learned how science drives sustainable management of Kenyaโs freshwater ecosystems.

Strengthening partnerships for a thriving Blue Economy ๐๐ค
KMFRI Mombasa Headquarters had the pleasure of hosting the Coast leadership of Cooperative Bank of Kenya for a courtesy visit aimed at deepening collaboration and exploring innovative financing pathways for research and community development.
The delegation was received by the Director General, Dr. Paul O***a, where discussions centered on how financial institutions can play a transformative role in supporting research investment ideas within coastal communities. Key focus areas included building structured financing models to support communities in growing and commercializing scientific innovations, and enhancing financial inclusion through tailored solutions.
The engagement also highlighted the importance of developing a clear roadmap for collaboration, strengthening KMFRIโs position as a strategic partner, and leveraging opportunities for joint initiatives such as financial literacy programs and staff capacity building.
This visit comes at a pivotal moment as Kenya prepares to host the 11th Our Ocean Conference, the first in Africa, and the upcoming 3rd Aquatic Resources & Blue Economy Conference (ARBEC III) this June and November 2026, respectively. As KMFRI continues to position itself regionally and globally, partnerships with financial institutions remain key to unlocking investments, advancing ocean science, and driving sustainable livelihoods.

KMFRI convened a high-level Strategic Breakfast at Mombasa Beach Hotel, bringing together financial institutions from banks, insurance firms, and Saccos to unlock the financing potential of the Blue Economy ahead of the Our Ocean Conference.
Led by the Director General, Dr. Paul O***a, the engagement underscored a powerful message: Our Ocean, Our Heritage, Our Future, which is not just a theme, it is a call to invest, innovate, and lead. As Kenya prepares to host the 11th Our Ocean Conference, the first in Africa and on our Coast, financial institutions have a unique opportunity to position themselves at the forefront of blue bonds and sustainability linked-ocean financing.
The upcoming Science and Research Symposium, hosted by the Government of Kenya's State Department of Blue Economy and Fisheries through KMFRI, will take place from June 14 to June 15, 2026. Science in action!
Today at KMFRI, Mombasa, CEO Dr. Paul O***a welcomed the MESCAL Project team on a courtesy call.
Multiscale connectivity at species and community levels to achieve conservation goals under climate change in the Western Indian Ocean (MESCAL) is a 3-year collaboration bringing together 10 funded partners across Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, South Africa, and France.
The project is focused on exploring how Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) enhance the resilience of fish populations in a changing climate.
The KMFRI team, led by Chief Scientist Dr. Gladys Okemwa, includes a multidisciplinary group of experts: Dr. James Mwaluma (fish larval ecology), Dr. Jacob Ochiewo (socioeconomics), and Dr. Thomas Mkare (genomics). This week, they are working closely with IRDโs Dr. Thomas Lamy (Project Manager) to co-develop PhD student Theo Eychenneโs work and further refine the research strategy.
