Energy remains a fundamental driver of economic and social growth, yet persistent challenges in power reliability continue to constrain Kenya’s progress. A Kippra Kenya study on Navigating Kenya’s Power Quality Landscape for a Sustainable Energy Future reveals significant inefficiencies within the electricity system that are directly affecting businesses, industries, and households.
The findings show that Kenya’s power system losses range between 15 and 25% annually, well above the recommended 10% threshold, pointing to major inefficiencies in transmission and distribution. At the same time, power interruptions remain higher than optimal levels, disrupting productivity and increasing the cost of doing business. Rapid growth in electricity demand, which is outpacing supply, is further straining the system and contributing to technical challenges such as power surges and illegal connections.
