TURKANA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE EYES STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP WITH SEPU TO BOOST SCIENCE INFRASTRUCTURE
In a significant move towards enhancing STEM education in NorthWestern Kenya, a high-level delegation from Turkana University College (TUC), led by Deputy Principal Prof. Hellen Wangechi, visited the School Equipment Production Unit (SEPU) earlier today.
The fact-finding mission was aimed at establishing a strategic partnership to strengthen the university’s laboratory and research infrastructure as it scales its academic offerings.
The visit focused on equipping several key departments essential to TUC’s mission of providing specialized research in resource sustainability and arid land management. The targeted infrastructure includes:
- Biology and Biological Sciences laboratory
- Chemistry and Physics Laboratories
- Health Sciences (specifically Anatomy, Biotechnology and Home Sciences laboratories.
Prof. Wangechi noted that as a growing institution, TUC is committed to ensuring its 2,000+ students have access to world-class facilities. "Modernizing our laboratories is not just about equipment; it’s about empowering our students to innovate and solve the unique challenges of the Turkana region," she stated.
The TUC team was hosted by SEPU CEO - Dr. Joel Mabonga, alongside members of the Unit’s Technical Committee of the Board and part of the management team.
During the tour, SEPU team showcased SEPU’s innovations in school equipment and laboratory technology. As a government unit under the Ministry of Education, SEPU has been at the forefront of manufacturing high-quality, cost-effective science kits and furniture tailored for the Kenyan curriculum.
"We are eager to support Turkana University College in its journey toward becoming a center of excellence," said Dr. Mabonga. "SEPU's technical expertise in laboratory production aligns perfectly with TUC's ambitious expansion plans."
Established in 2017 as a constituent college of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), TUC is the first public university in Turkana County. Located in Lodwar, it offers over 40 accredited programs. The institution has carved a niche in specialized research, focusing on the sustainable development of Kenya’s NorthWestern frontier.
The partnership with SEPU is expected to fast-track the operationalization of TUC’s new science blocks, providing students in Education, Business, and Technology with the practical tools needed for competitive scholarship.
