On the sidelines of , the CEO/Registrar held a meeting with AnaPaula DelaOCampos and Luciana Delgado, Technical Adviser in FAO’s Office of the Chief Economist, and explored opportunities to link warehouse receipt systems with food loss reduction and investment in agricultural storage infrastructure. Discussions highlighted the need to expand storage capacity for perishable commodities, particularly tomatoes and potatoes, through tailored technologies, facilities and investment models.

FAO’s Food Loss App (FLAPP) was identified as a potential tool for certifying and assessing the quality of commodities deposited in warehouses, while enabling operators to monitor post-harvest losses. Building on its existing East African regulatory requirements, FLAPP could be adapted to Kenya’s commodity-specific standards. Its data could also help quantify infrastructure investment needs and strengthen business cases for improved storage.

The discussion also explored mobilizing investment through FAO’s Hand-in-Hand Initiative and its Eastern Africa Investment Forum. Potential opportunities include hybrid public–private partnerships, EU-supported irrigation investments, and prospective Indian investment in pulse value chains, including the 21 warehouses discussed during the meeting.

Day 1 of the 54th Session of the Committee on World Food Security ( ) focused on translating shared experiences into practical solutions to end hunger and strengthen global food systems. Representing the Warehouse Receipt System Council, the CEO/Registrar, Ms Lucy Komen, joined the Kenyan delegation led by Dr. Paul Kipronoh Ronoh, Principal Secretary, State Department for Agriculture.

Discussions highlighted the scale of the challenge:

• 645 million people remain undernourished.
• Over 2 billion experience moderate or severe food insecurity.
• 2.69 billion could not afford a healthy diet in 2025.

The way forward calls for stronger agrifood systems, increased investment in small-scale producers, affordable nutritious diets, climate resilience, and responsible use of data and digital technologies. Governments, the private sector, development partners and philanthropies must work together to turn policy commitments into measurable impact.

For WRSC, the discussions reinforce a critical priority: linking production to structured markets, accessible commodity financing and efficient food trade. Strengthening storage, aggregation and market systems is essential to reducing post-harvest losses, improving farmers’ incomes and building resilient food supply chains.

Food security is not just about producing more. It is about ensuring that food is available, affordable, nutritious and accessible to all.

The goal is clear: translate global commitments into practical action for a world without hunger.

Today, the Council CEO and Registrar had the privilege of delivering a presentation at the Food Systems Side Event during the Africa Commerce & Industry Summit (ACIS) 2026 in Nairobi.

Africa’s agricultural transformation must go beyond production to build profitable, investment-ready and resilient value chains that create jobs, increase farmer incomes and strengthen food security.

At the Warehouse Receipt System Council, we champion a structured approach that transforms agricultural commodities into bankable assets, unlocking access to finance, strengthening market linkages and enabling farmers to trade on better terms.

Unlocking Africa’s food systems potential requires investment in storage and aggregation, commodity-backed financing, transparent markets, climate-smart value chains and regional trade.

The priority is clear: connect farmers to markets, commodities to finance, and production to profitable enterprise.
Together, we can build competitive agricultural value chains that drive inclusive economic growth across Africa.
