Say something about mwafrika

Let me preach. Just a little bit.

It's about genuine compassion and kindness to others, particularly strangers and the less fortunate in our communities and how God uses such avenues to meet us at our various points of need.

Kindly, refer to the holy bible, Genesis 18:1-15. Abraham demonstrated absolute love, compassion and generosity to total strangers without knowing that that would be a turning point in his life. This turned to be the key to his encounter with God and the fulfilment of a promise.

It turned out that these seemingly tired and weakly three men were God's Angels and divine visitors, the bearers of his promise.

The key lesson is in the way he handled the strangers. From selection of the best and fattest of the lambs, to ordering Sarah to knead bread from the best of flours. The servants were to tidy up guestrooms where the tired strangers would rest before embarking on their journey the next day.

I believe that Abraham of today would have just watched the strangers as they passed by. After all, si ni kila mtu ashugulike na yake.

Today's Abraham would have been deeply engrossed with his own issues like reaching old age without even a single child. Or not yet having gathered 'enough' money against his budgets and the 'supposed' safety nets.

Abraham of today wouldn't entertain filthy looking men for fear that they would turn out to be thieves. Again, how or when would one gain from such an entertainment?

And even if the strangers were to beg for water or something to eat, Abraham of today would look for that abandoned plastic cup, that useless plate. The food that overstayed and that low priced bread. After all, beggars aren't choosers as that is unacceptable entitlement.

Oh yes, and the deep religious faith in some of us would make us wave at them as they passed and perhaps whisper "please God help them." Or "together in prayers." Or such and other empty and spineless petitions.

But if they appeared on horse backs and in suits, today's Abraham would fall over himself even begging to help. They could be celebrities, you know! Or big people with connections. Seemingly, isn't the possibility of returning a favor real here?

From Abraham's story, we learn so many things about God and his intention for humanity. How He works, what and who He uses for His earthly missions.

God visits and speaks to us through that orphan next door. That sick stranger you aren't even related to. That widow. And you've got the chance to seize the Abraham moment and earn His favour.

Unknown to most of us, even today, God through His Angels still uses the words "a day like today in such and such a time you'll have a son," but interchangeably.

Yes, interchangeably because doing opposite of what Abraham did would also passively attract the opposite words like "because you think it's by your wisdom, material things or power, or by your selfishness, on a day like this next year, next month etc, you'l be without this thing, this family or this life that holds you back from seeing me and doing my will."

Mathew 25: 35-40 captures it so well. Take time to read through.

Amen somebody?

Several Kenyatta university students from the school of public health feared dead and others seriously injured after their bus was involved in a grisly accident along Mombasa road. The KU bus was hit by a trailer from the side. Our heartfelt condolences to the families of the departed as we wish speedy recovery to the injured.

It's sad that lucy Wambui Jennings has succumbed to injuries sustained from gunshot wounds inflicted on her by unknown assailants whose motive any intelligent person can guess.

It's more sad that land issues in Kenya remain being treated casually and even with outright constitutional provisions, impunity and corruption continue to threaten lives and property of Kenyans. Lucy is a daughter to a setller who had over 1000 acres of land in laikipia and since both the parents died, she obviously became the inheritor. Some 'members' of the community around the area however feel they too deserve a share.

While ignorance may make some whip emotions leading to impunity, it's either as a nation we choose to go by the constitution or risk a wide scale rapture whose consequences will be so dire. This is not about Lucy. It's about Kenya's adherence to the rule of law and its very own survival as a nation. Today it's Lucy, tomorrow it's you and I regardless of our land sizes and locations.

For justice to prevail, the right to this land must pass on to Lucy's next of kin, not some grabber or some criminals hiding behind a community.

Condolences to Lucy's family and friends.
