Dr. Kokonya, chair of the Kenya Board of Mental Health, was present at the event and highlighted a significant challenge facing mental health in our country: the absence of a national health master plan. This gap hinders our ability to address numerous issues related to mental health care.

Currently, only 15% of patients have access to the mental health services they need. It’s crucial that we advocate for a comprehensive national strategy to improve access and support for mental health across all regions. By doing so, we can ensure that more individuals receive the care they deserve and help break the stigma surrounding mental health issues.

Dr. Charity Muraguri, representing the chairman of the board, addressed attendees about the current status of mental health facilities in our country. She noted that 34 counties have access to psychiatrists and some mental health services, which is a positive step forward.

However, Dr. Muraguri emphasized the need for more progress. She urged the ministry to prioritize the establishment of mental health and substance abuse facilities in every county, ensuring that care is accessible to all. By expanding these resources, we can create a supportive environment for individuals facing mental health challenges and reduce the stigma surrounding these issues.

Our CEO, Dr. Ogato, officially opened the program by warmly welcoming our distinguished guests and everyone present. He emphasized the significance of this year's theme, linking it to worker productivity. He also reaffirmed MNTRH's commitment to its mission of healing minds, restoring lives and touching families.

He appealed to the CS Dr. Deborah Barasa to consider allocating a budget for the hospital to recruit additional doctors to address the existing shortage. He also emphasized the need for constructing a dedicated psychiatric ward for acute patients to ensure they are not placed in the same wards as other patients.
