Day 6: Nairobi International Trade Fair!

Kenyans from all walks of life streamed into the Council's stand today, drawn by the quality and craftsmanship of fine Kenyan leather. Visitors engaged our staff and MSMEs directly, handling the footwear, bags, belts and other leather products on display and learning first-hand about the artisans and entrepreneurs behind them.

Day 4: Nairobi International Trade Fair!

The Council's stand received a distinguished visitor today: the Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Hon. Mutahi Kagwe. During the visit, the CS interacted with MSMEs in the leather sector, engaging directly with the artisans and entrepreneurs behind the products on display and learning first-hand about their work, their challenges and their ambitions.

It was a timely reminder that the growth of Kenya's leather value chain begins with the small enterprises that give it life.

KLDC, in partnership with the Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute - ALLPI and the County Government of Kakamega (CGK), is undertaking the Cottage Tanning Training Programme for artisans from Kakamega County.

The programme seeks to strengthen the artisans technical capacity in cottage-level tanning by equipping them with practical skills in skins value addition to support enterprise development, job creation and sustainable livelihoods within the County.

The training was officially opened by Mr. Oscar Odunga, Chief Officer for Livestock, Veterinary Services and Fisheries, County Government of Kakamega, who underscored the importance of skills development and value addition in strengthening the leather value chain and unlocking sustainable economic opportunities.

It's been a busy week for the Kenya leather Development Council (KLDC) Technical Team in Kilifi and Taita Taveta Counties, marking the conclusion of county engagements under the Leather Value Chain Development Support (LVCDS) Project, in line with our bottom-up economic transformation agenda. With engagements now concluded, focus shifts to mobilizing resources to roll out the proposed Common Manufacturing Hubs (CMHs), which will empower MSMIs with shared production equipment and technology. The week's activities included finalizing deliberations on the Intergovernmental Partnership Agreement and project implementation framework.

The team also toured slaughterhouses and leather manufacturing enterprises across both counties, sensitizing flayers on quality improvement, assessing products for promotional opportunities, and guiding manufacturers on branding and packaging; reaffirming KLDC's commitment to a holistic, ground-up value chain approach as the Council now awaits resource mobilization to actualize the hubs.

The Kenya Leather Development Council (KLDC) has commenced county-level engagements on the proposed leather manufacturing hubs, with its Technical Team convening strategic engagement forums in Taita Taveta and Kilifi Counties.
The forums were chaired by the respective County Executive Committee Members for Trade, Tourism, Industrialization and Cooperative Development: Ms. Getrude Shuwe for Taita Taveta County and Hon. Raymond Ngala for Kilifi County. Deliberations focused on the Intergovernmental Partnership Agreement between KLDC and the County Governments, the implementation framework for the project, and measures to ensure its sustainability.
KLDC expresses its appreciation to the County Governments of Taita Taveta and Kilifi for their commitment to advancing the leather sector and securing its future growth.

Taita Taveta County has long been rich in livestock resources, yet the narrative has centred on raw material sales rather than value addition. That is changing. The KLDC Technical Team are currently engaging community groups driving this shift, including the Mwachabo Leather Tanners (Chawia Ward) and Neema Leather Products Manufacturing Group (Kasigau), gathering data on sector gaps and exploring a proposed Leather Products Common Manufacturing Hub envisioned to give enterprises shared access to machinery, boosting productivity, quality and competitiveness.

Since quality begins at the grassroots, the team also called on the County Director of Veterinary Services to explore better leveraging of hides, skins and rural tanneries; visited slaughterhouses to sensitize flayers on proper techniques and assess hide quality; engaged Mwanjila Vocational Training Centre on its emerging leather manufacturing training programmes; and toured the Mwasamba and Mwatela Tanning Sheds, where processing and value addition already thrive side by side.

These engagements reflect KLDC's commitment to a leather value chain that is technical, community-driven and inclusive, anchoring Kenya's bottom-up economic transformation in grassroots reality.

A milestone for Kenya's leather industry. Today we officially handed over a warehouse at the Kenya Leather Industrial Park, Kinanie, Machakos County to ReaLeather Ltd, our first anchor investor.

ReaLeather will produce leather raw materials and finished products right here in Kenya, turning local hides and skins into value-added goods, creating jobs, and putting KLIP on the map as East Africa's next leather manufacturing hub. KLIP moves from potential to production. This is what value addition looks like.
