Czech researchers and conservationists have been working with partners in Uganda 🇺🇬 and Rwanda 🇷🇼 for more than a decade to study and protect endangered mountain gorillas and chimpanzees through a One Health approach linking human, animal, and ecosystem health.

By advancing conservation, disease monitoring, and scientific cooperation, this partnership not only safeguards great apes but also helps build healthier ecosystems and more resilient communities in the face of environmental and climate-related challenges.

🇨🇿 Today we commemorate the 90th birth anniversary of Václav Havel – playwright, dissident, statesman, and the first President of the Czech Republic 🇨🇿. His legacy of truth, freedom, and humanity remains alive both at home and around the world.

For decades, Czech and Kenyan experts have worked together to save the northern white rhino from extinction. Today, with only two individuals remaining, an international team led by Safari Park Dvůr Králové and partners in Kenya is pioneering advanced reproductive technologies that offer hope for the species’ future.

This cooperation is about more than protecting a single animal. Biodiversity loss increases environmental vulnerability, while healthy ecosystems strengthen resilience to climate and other natural risks. By investing in conservation, scientific innovation and international partnerships, Czechia and Kenya are helping safeguard nature as a foundation for sustainable development and disaster risk reduction.

Together, we are proving that even the most challenging conservation stories can inspire hope. 🌍

From 2019–2024, the Czech Geological Survey and Ethiopian partners, supported by the Czech Development Agency, worked together on a project focused on protecting land, water resources, and agricultural landscapes in southern Ethiopia.

The project combined geoscientific mapping, satellite analysis, and local expertise to create landscape management plans for vulnerable areas 🌱

The initiative helps communities address erosion, land degradation, and climate change while promoting more sustainable and resilient agriculture.
Land management is a vital tool in addressing disaster risks, especially flooding.

Four critically endangered mountain bongos have been transferred from Czechia to Kenya as part of an international effort to restore the species in its natural habitat.

The transfer, carried out by Czech, Kenyan and European partners, will strengthen the genetic diversity of the population and support long-term recovery efforts.

Protecting biodiversity is also an investment in disaster risk reduction. Healthy ecosystems are more resilient to environmental shocks, support sustainable livelihoods, and help communities adapt to the growing impacts of climate change.
Proud to see Czechia contributing to the conservation of one of Kenya’s most iconic species and to building a more resilient future for people and nature alike. 🌍

We talk about preparedness a lot… but what does it actually look like?
Early warning systems, clear evacuation plans, and communities that know how to respond.

Because when people get the right information in time, lives can be saved. Through its work in disaster risk reduction, we continue to support efforts that keep communities prepared and protected.

Because preparedness doesn’t just react — it reduces impact.

Disasters don’t just happen… their impact can be reduced.
Across East Africa, floods, droughts, and fires continue to affect lives every year — but through preparedness, early warning systems, and strong partnerships, communities can better protect themselves.

Through its long-term commitment to disaster risk reduction, the Czech Republic is working with global partners like the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction to support resilience and reduce vulnerability.
Because the goal is simple: fewer lives lost, stronger communities, and a safer future for all.

Disaster Risk Reduction isn’t just about responding when disaster strikes—it’s about being prepared long before it does.

In this video, the Ambassador of the Czech Republic shares why DRR matters, the impact it has had over the years, and how the Czech Republic has continued to strengthen its systems to build a safer, more resilient society.

Because preparedness today helps protect lives tomorrow.

🌍 Last week marked the 13th Annual Subcommittee meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives to the UN Environment Programme in Nairobi.

It is an important session that allows us to review programme performance, management and funding. This year, the discussion on the ongoing UN80 reforms was particularly significant as works to translate environmental commitments into measurable results across the climate, biodiversity and land degradation agendas 🌳

🇨🇿 Czechia supports a strong UNEP—one that is guided by science and responds effectively to countries’ needs. To achieve this, we need a strong UN Environment Assembly. We are therefore grateful to Mathew Samuda 🇯🇲, President of UNEA-8, for engaging with regional groups and presenting his vision for 2027. It is exactly this kind of leadership that provides the basis for future success.
