The African Biodigester Component (ABC), implemented in Kenya by GIZ and SNV in partnership with Africa Bioenergy Programmes Ltd. (ABPL), has launched a nationwide Productive Use of Biogas (PUB) training program aimed at strengthening the country’s clean energy workforce. Through this initiative, 50 biodigester technicians across five counties will be equipped with hands-on skills to retrofit gasoline engines and install productive-use appliances that run on biogas—including chaff cutters, generators, millers, incubators, brooders, and milk pasteurizers. Currently we have trained 26 trainees in Productive use from Baringo, Nyamira, Kericho, Eldoret, Kitale, Kakamega, Taita Taveta, Bomet, Kisumu, Nandi, Siaya, Vihiga and Uasin Gishu counties.
The training supports ABC’s broader goal of accelerating the adoption of over 20,000 small and 250 medium biodigesters by enhancing technical capacity, improving after‑sales service, and expanding opportunities for green enterprise development. By building local expertise in biogas technologies, the program contributes to Kenya’s clean energy transition, strengthens rural livelihoods, and promotes sustainable, affordable energy solutions for households and agricultural communities.

Biodigesters transform organic waste into clean energy and organic fertilizer, embedding circular economy principles that reduce methane emissions, improve sanitation, and enhance soil productivity.
This approach turns waste management into a climate solution while creating income opportunities, particularly for women and youth engaged in waste aggregation and organic fertilizer enterprises.
Improved soil fertility increases food production and dietary diversity, strengthening household resilience to climate shocks and food insecurity.

We are excited to announce our ongoing three-day Gender Awareness Training, designed to deepen our county coordinators' knowledge and application of gender equity in our initiatives across Nairobi, Kajiado, Murang’a, Kiambu, Taita Taveta, and Kilifi counties.
At Africa Bioenergy Programs Limited (ABPL), we understand that true sustainable development hinges on ensuring both women and men enjoy equal opportunities to engage in, contribute to, and reap the benefits of community projects.
Our commitment to integrating gender perspectives into all our programs, from clean energy innovations to agricultural development and community empowerment, drives our mission forward.
With collaborative efforts, we can create communities where everyone’s voice is heard, opportunities are equitable, and each individual has the power to thrive.

Biodigesters capture methane emissions from livestock manure and organic waste streams, preventing the release of a greenhouse gas over 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide. By converting methane into clean biogas for cooking and energy use, households reduce their carbon footprint while gaining reliable, low-cost energy.
This intervention reduces women’s unpaid labor associated with fuelwood collection, improves household safety, and creates time for income-generating activities. At the same time, bio-slurry enhances soil fertility, increases crop yield, and improves household nutrition and food security—demonstrating a scalable, community-driven climate mitigation solution for the future. , , ,
