An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) expert mission has commenced at the Central Radioactive Waste Processing Facility (CRWPF) in Oloolua, Ngong, to support Kenya in finalizing its national inventory of radioactive waste.

The five-day mission, taking place from 11 to 15 May 2026, is being conducted in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency and Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority.

The initiative is designed to strengthen Kenya’s regulatory framework for radiation safety and nuclear security by ensuring that all radioactive sources in storage are accurately identified, categorized and tracked. A complete and up-to-date national inventory is essential for protecting people, property and the environment from potential radiological hazards and for preventing the unauthorized use of radioactive materials.

The mission brings together international experts from Chile, Morocco and the IAEA. The team comprises Alfonso Bustos Mateluna of the Chilean Nuclear Energy Commission (CCHEN), Mohamed Tahiri of Morocco’s National Centre for Nuclear Energy, Sciences and Techniques (CNESTEN), and Vivian Pereira Campos, who is serving as the IAEA Technical Officer for the mission, with Mr KNRA's Senior Principal Nuclear Inspector Eric Ngotho serving as the national counterpart for the mission.

During the five-day engagement, the experts will work closely with KNRA officials and other national stakeholders to review progress, share international best practices, and provide technical guidance on radioactive waste inventory management systems and methodologies. The mission will also assess procedures for the safe storage and disposal of disused radioactive sources and make recommendations to strengthen Kenya’s long-term capacity for radioactive source control.

The mission reflects Kenya’s continued commitment to upholding international standards in nuclear safety and security and to enhancing regulatory oversight in line with IAEA guidance and global best practice.
