🔥 Tragedy in Kibera: Night Fire Destroys Homes in Makongeni Village, Over 20 Families Displaced

At around 9:00 PM tonight, a devastating fire broke out at Makongeni Village, Nyumba Kubwa area in Makina Ward, Kibera Constituency, destroying several houses and leaving more than 20 families homeless.
Preliminary reports indicate that the cause of the fire is alleged to be an electric fault, which quickly spread through the densely populated area. Firefighters responded promptly and managed to put out the flames, preventing the blaze from spreading further.
The incident comes just a day after the burial of the late Raila Amolo Odinga, deepening the sorrow among residents still mourning his passing.

The Bucket Approach towards fire fighting is a local mechanism that has been used for so many years as fire extinguisher is limited and a privilege mostly available in well established organizations or institutions in Kibera.

Fire Safety Awareness Drive Held in Kibera.

In a joint effort to enhance community preparedness, several organizations came together in Kibera to hold a sensitization session on fire safety measures. The initiative was spearheaded by African Fire Mission, in collaboration with Gro6, Foundation of Hope, and the Kibera Community Emergency Response Team.
The session focused on equipping residents with practical knowledge on:
Fire prevention and early warning signs
Safe evacuation procedures
Proper use of firefighting equipment
Emergency response coordination within the community
Community members were also urged to remain vigilant and proactive in preventing fire incidents, which have been a recurring challenge in informal settlements. The training aimed at empowering households to take simple yet effective steps that could save lives and property in case of an outbreak.
Organizers emphasized the importance of collective responsibility, encouraging residents to spread the knowledge and build a culture of safety across Kibera.
