*BUILDING RESILIENT FEED AND FODDER SYSTEMS TO BOOST AFRICA'S LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY*

In Africa, livestock contributes significantly to the food supply and nutritional security, serves as a source of income and a means for capital accumulation , generates employment, and supplies inputs and services for crop production. It is an important source of raw materials for the agro industry sector.

The effects of the recent and ongoing conflicts, the global 3 Cs ( Covid 19, Climate Change and the Conflict in Eastern Euerope) on African
feed and fodder systems have a debilitating impact on the growth of the livestock sector on the continent.

This evidence base is critical to shaping coordinated action in response to feed and fodder shortages that have led to a huge loss of livestock (over 8.9 million livestock in the greater horn of Africa region alone). It drove up prizes of high nutritive livestock sourced foods, making them hardly accessible to some sections of the population that need them the most.

Feed costs 60-70% of the total cost of animal production. The crises have exposed significant weaknesses and vulnerabilities in the African feed and fodder input and supply.

The Reselient African Feed and Fodder Project is an initiative of the African Union aimed to assist member States to understand and mitigate against the effects of the recent and ongoing global crisis on the African feed and Fodder systems.

The project's objective is to respond to the worsened food and nutrition security coupled by the recent crises that have negatively affected African feed and fodder systems.

The ongoing workshop, which is a congregation of various stakeholders in the livestock industry, therefore endeavours to give birth to resilient African feed and fodder systems, which will augment the continent's livestock industry.

Resilient African Feed and Fodder Systems Project launch in Abuja Nigeria. RAFFS Project and African Women in Animal Resources Farming and Agribusiness Network-Nigeria Chapter launch launch in Abuja Nigeria.

The African Union-InterAfrican Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) is set to launch inception workshops and assessments for the Resilient African Feed and Fodder Systems Project (RAFFS) in 6 African Union Member States. Uganda will be the first country to launch these activities. This project aims to address critical challenges impacting African feed and fodder systems.

The RAFFS Project seeks to respond to challenges posed by the Triple C crises: Covid-19, Climate Change shocks, and the Conflict between Russia and Ukraine. These crises have resulted in substantial livestock losses, particularly in the greater Horn of Africa, affecting livelihoods, incomes, and the affordability of essential livestock-sourced foods.

Feed costs, constitutes approximately 60-70% of animal production expenses. This leaves African feed and fodder supply chains vulnerable. To address these challenges, it’s important to safeguard livelihoods, ensure business continuity, and strengthen the resilience of feed and fodder systems in the face of escalating and multifaceted shocks. RAFFS project seeks to offer short-term solutions while building resilience in these systems.

The overall goal of the project is to enhance food and nutrition security by addressing the adverse effects of recent crises on African feed and fodder systems.

Kenya hosts a global conference on tackling Trypanosomiasis in Africa
Mombasa, Kenya, September 18, 2023

⏯African Trypanosomiasis, commonly known as "sleeping sickness" in human and Nagana in cattle, continues to be a significant threat to both human and livestock health, limiting land use and perpetuating poverty across the continent. This disease, transmitted by the tsetse fly, is responsible for an estimated 1000 cases in people annually, with 55 million people in sub-Saharan Africa at risk.

⏯To combat this relentless threat, the International Scientific Council for Trypanosomiasis Research and Control (ISCTRC), a vital arm of the African Union Commission, is spearheading efforts to combat the disease. Under the auspices of the ISCTRC, the 36th General Conference will be hosted by Kenya in Mombasa from September 18 to 22, 2023.
