Chestnut Peace Run Held in Nairobi as a Symbol of Solidarity with Ukraine
On May 31 2026, the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Kenya organised the Chestnut Peace Run in Nairobi, bringing together more than 120 participants from Kenya, Ukraine and other countries in a powerful demonstration of solidarity, friendship and community spirit.
The event gathered members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of international organisations, Kenyan youth groups, the Ukrainian community and numerous friends of Ukraine.
The Chestnut Run traces its origins to Kyiv, where more than three decades ago it was launched as a charitable initiative supporting children with heart conditions. Over the years, it has become one of Ukraine’s most recognised civic traditions, uniting thousands of participants around the values of compassion, social responsibility and mutual support.
Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the initiative acquired an additional international dimension. Beyond its charitable mission, it has become a symbol of global solidarity with the Ukrainian people and their resilience in the face of unprecedented challenges.
The Nairobi edition marked the first time the event was held in Kenya, extending this longstanding Ukrainian tradition to East Africa and bringing together people of different nationalities, backgrounds and professions around a common message of unity and support.
The Embassy of Ukraine expresses its sincere gratitude to all participants, partners, volunteers and supporters who contributed to the success of the initiative. Special appreciation goes to LG Electronics East Africa, Opalnet Limited, local youth organisations and all friends of Ukraine whose commitment helped make the event possible.
The successful organisation of the Chestnut Peace Run in Nairobi demonstrated once again that solidarity with Ukraine transcends borders and that people from different parts of the world continue to stand together in support of freedom, human dignity and peace.

❗️До уваги громадян України, які перебувають у Кенії та Уганді або планують поїздки до цих країн

У зв’язку зі спалахом вірусної хвороби Ебола (Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease) у регіоні ДР Конго та Уганди, Всесвітня організація охорони здоров’я (ВООЗ) оголосила ситуацію надзвичайною у сфері громадського здоров’я міжнародного значення (Public Health Emergency of International Concern – PHEIC).

У зв’язку з цим держави регіону, зокрема Уганда та Кенія, посилили санітарно-епідеміологічні заходи.

Посилені заходи контролю запроваджено насамперед у міжнародних аеропортах, а також на сухопутних пунктах пропуску на кордоні Уганди з ДР Конго та на західному напрямку в Кенії, який використовується для транскордонного руху з Угандою.

🇺🇬 В Уганді, де підтверджено випадки захворювання, запроваджено:
▪️посилений медичний скринінг у міжнародних аеропортах та на сухопутних пунктах пропуску;
▪️температурний контроль та перевірку стану здоров’я пасажирів;
▪️моніторинг осіб, які прибувають із зон підвищеного ризику;
▪️посилені заходи епіднагляду та протиепідемічного контролю.

🇰🇪 У Кенії підтверджених випадків захворювання на Еболу не зафіксовано. Водночас країна посилила готовність системи охорони здоров’я та прикордонний контроль, зокрема шляхом посиленого медичного скринінгу пасажирів у пунктах пропуску та аеропортах.

Посольство України рекомендує громадянам України:
• уважно стежити за офіційними повідомленнями органів влади та ВООЗ;
• враховувати можливе посилення процедур контролю та затримки під час перетину кордонів;
• уникати поїздок до районів із підвищеним епідеміологічним ризиком без нагальної потреби;
• дотримуватися правил особистої гігієни;
• уникати контактів з особами з симптомами інфекційних захворювань;
• у разі появи симптомів негайно звертатися за медичною допомогою.

Громадянам України рекомендується підтримувати зв’язок із рідними та повідомляти про своє перебування під час поїздок у віддалені райони.

З 25 по 31 травня в Україні проходить Національний тиждень безбар’єрності — ініціатива, покликана привернути увагу до створення доступного, інклюзивного та людиноцентричного середовища для кожного.
Безбар’єрність — це не лише про фізичний доступ до простору. Це також про рівний доступ до інформації, освіти, державних послуг, цифрових сервісів, культури, праці та можливості повноцінно брати участь у суспільному житті.
В умовах триваючої російської агресії ця тема набуває особливого значення для України. Війна створює нові виклики для ветеранів і ветеранок, людей з інвалідністю, внутрішньо переміщених осіб, людей старшого віку, батьків із дітьми та всіх, хто постраждав від війни.
Міністерство закордонних справ України підтверджує свою відданість принципам безбар’єрності та продовжує інтегрувати стандарти доступності й інклюзивності у дипломатичну службу, консульську діяльність і міжнародну взаємодію.
Україна вдячна міжнародним партнерам за підтримку у розбудові доступного та інклюзивного суспільства. Безбар’єрна відбудова України — це питання прав людини, поваги до гідності та справедливого майбутнього.

Nairobi has joined the global network of Ukrainian Bookshelves: the first Ukrainian Bookshelf in East Africa was officially opened at the Kenya National Library Service.
The initiative is implemented under the patronage of the First Lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska, and today unites 390 Ukrainian Bookshelves across 72 countries worldwide.
The opening ceremony brought together representatives of the diplomatic corps, Kenyan cultural and educational institutions, members of the Ukrainian community, and the leadership of the Kenya National Library Service.
In his remarks, Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Kenya Yurii Tokar noted that in recent years the world has come to know Ukraine through the resilience of the Ukrainian people, while that resilience itself is deeply rooted in Ukrainian history, culture, language, and identity. In this context, the Ukrainian Bookshelf initiative helps people discover Ukraine not only through headlines, but also through literature, culture, and human experience.
During the ceremony, the address of the First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska was presented, emphasizing the importance of books as a tool for mutual understanding between nations and for countering disinformation, stereotypes, and manipulation.
An important part of the event was also the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Kenya National Library Service and the V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine, opening new opportunities for professional, cultural, and humanitarian cooperation between Ukraine and Kenya.
A symbolic Africa Day cultural flashmob also took place during the event: participants collectively embroidered a map of Africa using traditional Ukrainian embroidery techniques as a sign of friendship, mutual respect, and cultural dialogue between Ukraine and African nations.

The Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Kenya is pleased to invite representatives of diplomatic missions, cultural and educational institutions, media, academia, libraries, civil society, and members of the Ukrainian community in Kenya to attend the opening ceremony of the first Ukrainian Bookshelf in East Africa at the Kenya National Library Service (KNLS).
The event is organized jointly by the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Kenya and the Kenya National Library Service as part of the Africa Day celebrations.
The Ukrainian Bookshelf initiative, launched under the patronage of the First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska, aims to promote Ukrainian literature, culture, history, and language abroad while strengthening intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding between nations.
The ceremony will mark the opening of the Ukrainian Bookshelf and the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine and the Kenya National Library Service.
The programme is expected to include online participation of representatives of Ukrainian institutions, as well as a special address by the First Lady of Ukraine.
As part of the event, participants will also be invited to join a special cultural flashmob dedicated to Africa Day — the collective weaving of a symbolic map of Africa using traditional Ukrainian weaving techniques. The initiative is intended to symbolize friendship, interconnectedness, and cultural dialogue between Ukraine and African nations.

Ahead of Africa Day, Ukraine and African partners discussed new opportunities for trade, investment and economic cooperation during the online forum “Ukraine–Africa Trade Dialogue”.
Particularly encouraging was the active participation and interest from the Kenyan side, including business associations, investment institutions and private sector representatives.
Even in times of full-scale war, Ukraine continues to strengthen ties with African partners and expand cooperation in areas such as agriculture, logistics, energy, digital technologies and infrastructure.
