“The future of our agriculture sector may very well rely on the smallest livestock we have—the bee.”
Today, the State Department for Livestock Development, through the Directorate of Livestock Production, brought together key partners including the State Department for Agriculture, World Food Programme (WFP), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Directorate of Veterinary Services - DVS Kenya and Kenya Forest Service (KFS) for an Apiculture Stakeholder Breakfast Forum ahead of World Bee Day 2026.
With Kenya producing about 19,000 metric tonnes of honey against a demand of over 43,000 metric tonnes, the message was clear: this gap is an opportunity to create jobs, grow enterprises, and boost farmer incomes especially across ASAL regions.
As we scale production, strengthen value addition and expand markets, we must also confront key threats to bees, including:
√ Unsafe pesticide use,
√ Climate change and,
√ Ecosystem degradation
Protecting the bee is not just an environmental priority, it is an economic one.
