Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale today presided over the climax of the International Nurses Week celebrations in Nairobi, where key policy and strategic frameworks aimed at strengthening nursing and midwifery practice in Kenya were unveiled.
Among the documents launched were the Internship Guidelines, policy and training frameworks, and other strategic publications designed to enhance professional standards, improve quality training, and strengthen service delivery within the nursing and midwifery workforce.
The event also marked the unveiling of the Nurses and Midwives Recognition and Awards Scheme, an initiative intended to celebrate exemplary service, promote professionalism, and inspire excellence among nurses and midwives across the country.
Held under the theme, “Our Nurses, Our Future – Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” the celebrations brought together healthcare leaders, practitioners, and development partners to recognize the critical role nurses and midwives play in advancing Universal Health Coverage and strengthening Kenya’s healthcare system.
Hon. Duale reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting the nursing workforce through enhanced deployment to underserved areas, improved training and continuous professional development, and strengthened collaboration with county governments to improve staffing, welfare, and career progression.
He further commended nurses and midwives for their resilience, compassion, and unwavering dedication to delivering accessible, quality, and people-centered healthcare services to Kenyans.
The event was attended by Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni, Johnson & Johnson Foundation Director of Global Community Impact for Sub-Saharan Africa Anthony Gitau, National Nurses Association of Kenya Chairperson Collins Ojwang, Nursing Council of Kenya Chairperson Abdi Maalim, CEO/Registrar Lister Onsongo, Head of Nursing and Midwifery Services Judith Awinja, alongside county and national government leaders.
