In the early 90s, in Nairobi’s urban pockets—Embakasi, Majengo, Umoja, Kibera, Githurai, and Rongai—a revolution was born. Not political, not industrial, but musical.

We didn’t know we were birthing Kalpop, a movement blending chakacha, blues, rumba, Afrofusion, and lingual bars laced in sheng, Swahili, and English. We just knew we were tired of gatekeepers.
