PRESIDENT RUTO BEGINS STATE VISIT TO SOUTH AFRICA TO STRENGTHEN BILATERAL TIES
03/06/2026
The Office of the Government Spokesperson is currently participating in the ongoing breakfast forum on the "Enhancing Democracy and Inclusion" initiative in the political space for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) at the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE).
Bringing together regulatory bodies, legislators, and civil society organizations, this vital forum is generating valuable insights on dismantling barriers to leadership and creating clear pathways to political participation and decision-making.
Discussions are highlighting key milestones, including the implementation of the Persons with Disabilities Act, the ratification of the African Disability Protocol, the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties’ (ORPP) 15% special interest funding incentive, and successful grassroots models that have already integrated more than 30,000 PWD officials into party structures.
Progressive county-level initiatives are also taking centre stage, including a KSh10 million allocation for assistive devices to enhance public participation. However, significant structural gaps persist, with vague legal definitions leaving 17 county assemblies without PWD representation. These challenges are further compounded by high campaign costs and systemic accessibility barriers.
As the forum continues, the collective focus remains clear: supporting efforts to secure precise legislative definitions from the National Assembly, advancing the Disability Inclusion Charter, and ensuring that compliance evolves from a tokenistic checklist into a sustainable culture of shared and inclusive democratic leadership.
