In implementing proposed reforms in the tea sector by the government. State Department of Agriculture is keen on ensuring a farmers centered management policy where the farmer is the boss. Agriculture Principal Secretary Dr Paul Kipronoh Rono has kicked off a farmers engagement program where he leads top government officials into barazas with farmers on the ground. Last weekend the PS toured Meru and Bomet Counties to interact with farmers in a move aimed at improving production in the tea value chain. In Meru the PS intervened on the raging dispute between farmers and managers at Micii Mikuru Tea factory in Meru on bonus payout. The PS ordered the local DCI to investigate the fraudulent registration of Micii Mikuru Tea factory under three different business names and to unravel the beneficiaries of millions of shillings channeled to the three identical companies. He later toured Githongo tea factory in Imenti Central. In Bomet, Konoin Constituency the PS met with farmers and unveiled the Certificate of Approval (CAO) for commencement of construction of the Kiptenden and Embomos Satellite tea factories.

Agriculture Principal Secretary Dr Paul Kiprono Rono today toured Michimikuru and Githongo Tea factories in Meru County.During the visit,the PS ordered investigations into suspected incidences of fraud and the registration of three suspicious companies in the name of Michimikuru Tea Factory,believed to have been used by crooks to siphon millions of shillings belonging to local tea farmers.The PS directed Kenya Tea Development Authority to refund farmers all the monies deducted from their pay for fertilisers and other inputs,adding that government provided subsidised fertilisers to support small holder famers in the sector.Dr Rono ordered the local DCI to probe criminal activities by various cartels targetting farmers by falsifying weight and illegal calibration with the intention of stealing from farmers.He further announced that his office will next week dispatch a team of experts to also join in the investigations in order to close in on conmen and cartels defrauding the Meru Tea farmers.He reiterated government commitment to turn around the tea sector and urged local farmers to increase production saying ground is being cleared to make tea farming a great venture once again.

Tea stakeholders met in Mombasa to celebrate a centennial milestone in the sector, commemorating 100 years since Kenya went into commercial tea farming in 1923.At the official opening of the Kenya Tea Summit that closed at the weekend, Agriculture Principal Secretary Dr Paul Kiprono Rono called for an enhanced and modernized marketing and value addition strategies to make the Kenyan tea much more marketable intentionally .The State Department of Agriculture is routing for an annual Tea Trade Mission for Kenya, to stage the ground for a tea marketing initiative around the globe. Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki and Agriculture CS Andrew Muia who joined the industry players at the Tea Summit hosted at the Sarova Whitesands Hotel Mombasa, said the Kenyan tea sector has a brilliant future and that the government is investing everything to ensure increased productivity in the value chain.
