Love Does not Seek Its Own

[Paul said,] “I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”Acts 20:35

Happiness is a unique commodity. It is never found by the person shopping for it. Lonely men and women in every age have admitted the futility of their search for happiness, most notably King Solomon in the book of Ecclesiastes. This wealthy, powerful king, with servants to cater to his every whim, found most things in life to be tedious, meaningless, and devoid of joy.

Most of us get married assuming that we are going to be happy. After the wedding, we find that our mate does not always seek to make us happy. Perhaps our spouse even demands more and more of our time, energy, and resources for his or her own happiness. We feel cheated and used, so we fight for our rights. We demand that our spouse do certain things for us, or we give up and seek happiness elsewhere.

Part of the apostle Paul’s definition of love in 1 Corinthians 13 is that it is “not self-seeking.” Genuine happiness is the by-product of making someone else happy. I wonder what would have happened if King Solomon had found someone to serve? Don’t the Scriptures say, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35)?

Do you want to be happy? Discover someone else’s needs, and seek to meet them. Why not begin with your spouse? “How may I help you?” is a good question with which to begin.

Lord Jesus, you told us that blessing comes from giving, not receiving. Please help me to turn around my expectations. I don’t want to waste my time and energy grasping at happiness only to be disappointed. Instead, show me how to reach out to my spouse, giving to him or her. I want to bring happiness to my mate through the way I express my love.

A God We Can Count On

O Lord, I am calling to you. Please hurry! Listen when I cry to you for help! . . . Take control of what I say, O Lord, and keep my lips sealed. Don’t let me lust for evil things; don’t let me participate in acts of wickedness. Don’t let me share in the delicacies of those who do evil.Psalm 141:1-4

In this psalm David not only called on the Lord for protection from the enemies that were hunting him down; he also cried out to God and counted on him to do a deep work within his own heart. He needed God to set a guard over his lips and prevent wrong speech, to preserve his heart, to deliver him from lust and evil desires that would lead to wicked acts, and to so work within David that he would welcome reproof from godly people. He knew he couldn’t depend on his flesh and human effort. They are too weak and too easily led astray. He relied instead on God’s heart-changing power to be at work within him. As David prayed, we also can—and must—freshly call on the Lord to be at work in our hearts, and then we can rest in and count on his faithfulness to transform us from the inside out.

LORD, I praise you that you are a God I can count on to keep me! Left to myself, I am not strong enough to walk in your paths. Deliver me from choosing my own way instead of yours. Strengthen my heart, and thank you for working within me according to your purposes!

If God maintains sun and planets in bright and ordered beauty, he can keep us

Benefit of salvation
We are partakers of God's promises and blessings through Jesus Christ. Romans 8:17 and if children, then heirs-heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if we indeed suffer with him, that we may also be glorified together.
There are some legalities that you cannot apply when you are not born again Matthew 17:27 but he answered and said, it is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs. It is the mercy of God that heals and meet the needs of non believers but they cannot ask the same in boldness. Hebrews 4:16 let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time ofneed.
Note:- A believer walks in boldness but a non believer cannot.

We rest from works. A born again person is justified by their faith in Christ. Hebrews 4:9,10, there remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who had entered his rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from his. God no longer wants us to walk in works but as children of grace.
We have the assurance of eternal life. John 11:25, Jesus said to her, i am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he may die he shall live. A born again person has the assurance of heaven and they also do not fear death. 2cor 5:8 we are confident, yes we are pleased rather to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
Note:- non believers are doomed from eternal damnation.
We are freed from the yoke of guilt and condemnation. The nature of sin is to condemn and is a yoke. When we come to Christ, the yoke of sin is broken. Romans 8:1 there is therefore now no condemnation for them that are in Christ Jesus.
You become a son of God. A son is entrusted with authority and we are able to exercise kingdom authority on earth. A son represents cases on behalf of other people to the Father. We are therefore given authority to represent others before God; that is why we are able to pray for our family, the nation, the church... etc. John 17:6-12 give an account of Jesus praying for his disciples. He also prayed for peter in Luke 22:31,32 and the Lord said, Simon Simon, indeed Satan has asked for you that he may sift you as wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith should fail not, and when you have returned to me, strengthen your brethren. A non believer has no authority as a son
We receive the gift of holy spirit. The holy spirit is for believers, and is our help even when nobody offers to help. Non believers cannot experience such help and that is why they can go to extremes in order to attain help from man.
We receive the right to deal with the enemy. As a believer you can take authority in the name of Jesus and command the enemy and he obeys. We have the authority over powers of darkness. This is different with the non believer because they cannot fight the same kingdom which they serve.

The place of the cross in salvation
The cross is the place where Jesus bore our sins in His body and suffered in our place. Isaiah 53:5, but he was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities, the chastening for our well being fell upon him and by his scouring we are healed
Ezekiel 18:20, the soul that sins shall surely die... At the cross Jesus took all our sins and died on our behalf. In other words, Jesus purchased us from sin Hebrews 9:22 states that there is no remission of sins without the shedding of blood.
Without Jesus dying on the cross, even calling upon his name would not have saved us. No sinner could please God perfectly or offer perfect sacrifice because our blood is that of sin; but God the father found himself a perfect sacrifice that had sinless blood to save us from sin.

Why is salvation needed
Salvation is the total work of God by which He seeks to deliver us from ruin. After the fall of man in Genesis, the Lord developed a plan for bringing man back and restoring the fellowship that had been lost. He also sought to save man from death and restore his original state resulting to His death on the cross.
Hebrews 9:22 without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sins The blood of Jesus had to be shed for us to receive forgiveness of sin.
After the fall, men used the blood of cows and goats to atone for their sins and to appease the wrath of God. However, this was temporary as it only covered the sins but did not blot the sins permanently. As a result, this practice used to be done once every year in those days, the children of Israel were required to keep the law but this would not work in days of Moses no body was able to attain salvation because the blood of bulls and goats could not wash away the people's sins
But praise be to God for providing a better sacrifice for the eternal remission of a man's sins. This was the perfect sacrifice, sinless blood of his own son, better than the blood of animals.... Jesus Christ. 2cor 5:21, for he made who knew no sin to be sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God in him.

(Briefly talk about baptism)
Baptism is prophetic: dying with Christ and resurrecting in him.
It gives one the experience that Jesus had and also strengthens one's faith.
It is God's command from God in mark 16:16 and is good but cannot cause one to miss heaven. An example is the thief on the cross; he had no time to be baptized but Jesus said to him in Luke 23:43, Assuredly I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise
People on their death beds do not have the time to be baptized but as long as they are born again; heaven becomes their home. Romans 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus Christ and believe in your heart that the Lord raised him from the dead you will be saved. What salvation is not
Salvation is not of works; it is not about how many church services you attend, acts of kindness, observing holidays etc. Eph 2:8,9
The fact that somebody gives alms more than you do or pays tithes more than you do does not mean that they are born again better than you. No amount of good works can substitute for salvation. After receiving Jesus Christ we are equally born again.
Acts 10 speaks of a man named Cornelius verse 2 state that he was a devout man, one who feared God with all his household, who gave alms generously to the people and prayed to God always. God sent Peter to Cornelius's household, preached to them, received Jesus and were baptized.
From the above scriptures, Cornelius was a devout man; he did everything good in the sight of man but was not yet born again until received Jesus Christ. This is to tell us that no matter how good and religious one is, they have not attained salvation until they receive Jesus Christ.
