Know your Country-Meru National Park
Meru National Park is a Kenyan Game park located east of Meru, 350 km from Nairobi. Covering an area of 870 km², it is one of the most famous known parks of Kenya. It has abundant rainfall, 635–762 mm in the west of the park and 305–356 mm in the east. The rainfall results in tall grass and lush swamps, which make it difficult to spot game.
Wildlife-
It has a wide range of wild beasts like elephant, hippopotamus, lion, leopard, cheetah, black rhinoceros and some rare antelopes.
Meru was one of the two areas in which conservationists George Adamson and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the Lioness made famous in the best selling book and award winning movie Born Free. Elsa the Lioness is buried in this park and part of Joy's ashes were scattered on her gravesite. Joy Adamson released Pippa the cheetah in this park.
Maasai Mara National Reserve
The Maasai Mara National Reserve (also spelled Masai Mara; known by the locals as The Mara) is a large game reserve in south-western Kenya, which is effectively the northern continuation of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. It is named after the Maasai people (the traditional inhabitants of the area) and their description of the area when looked at from afar: "Mara", which is Maa (Maasai language) for "spotted," an apt description for the circles of trees, scrub, savanna, and cloud shadows that mark the area.
It is famous for its exceptional population of Big Cats, game, and the annual immense migration of zebra, Thomson's gazelle, and wildebeest from the Serengeti every year from July to October, known as the Great Migration.
All members of the "Big Five" (lion, leopard, African elephant, African buffalo, and Black Rhinoceros) are found in the Maasai Mara. The population of Black rhinos was fairly numerous until 1960, but it was severely depleted by poaching in the 1970s and early 1980s, dropping to a low of 15 individuals. Numbers have been slowly increasing, but the population was still only up to an estimated 23 in 1999.
Elephants, Hippopotamus and Nile crocodiles are found in large groups in the Mara and Talek rivers. Leopards, hyenas, cheetahs, jackals, and bat-eared foxes can also be found in the reserve. The plains between the Mara River and the Esoit Siria Escarpment are probably the best area for game viewing, in particular regarding lion and cheetah.
Know Your Country-Kenya
Take 2 Days/ 1 Night at Lake Nakuru and explore Lake Nakuru National Park - dominated by a gentle undulating terrain with open bush and woodlands, typical of the dry rift valley vegetation. Twenty seven percent (27%) of the park is composed of the Lake Nakuru waters.
Lake Nakuru National Park lies in the volcanic – strewn Great Rift Valley, one of the chain of 8 lakes, which stretch the length of Kenya, Tanzania to Ethiopia. 160 kilometers from Nairobi, you will drive through the farmlands of the Kikuyu Community and drop down the escarpment into the dramatic floor of the Rift Valley.
The lake is world famous as the location of the greatest bird spectacle on earth - myriads of fuchsia Pink flamingoes whose numbers are legion, often more than a million maybe two.
Lunch will be served at a Lodge in the Park and thereafter another ‘Spice’ game drive en-route to Nairobi arriving before dusk.
The Park was declared a Rhino Sanctuary in 1983. The Rhino stocking programme which ensued received white rhinos from South Africa. Currently the sanctuary has approximately 45 black and 31 white rhinoceros.
The lake water is highly saline but supports a habitat rich in biodiversity including a variety of aquatic flora and fauna. The lake also is inhabited by water mammals mainly hippopotamus and claw less otters while the terrestrial part of the park supports a large number of other African plain mammals. The Park is also a sanctuary of the Rothschild's Giraffe.
