NITA Kisumu and NuPEA Explore Skills Development Opportunities for Kenya’s Nuclear Power Programme
The National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) is exploring opportunities to support local industrial participation in Kenya’s nuclear power programme following an engagement with a team from the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA) at NITA Kisumu.
The visit focused on assessing the Centre’s training capacity and identifying potential areas of partnership to prepare Kenyan craftspersons for the establishment of the proposed Nuclear Power Plant in Siaya County.
The NuPEA team, drawn from the Industrial Involvement Technical Working Group, is identifying opportunities for local industries and institutions to contribute to the nuclear power programme by developing the technical skills required for the project.
During the engagement, the team recognised NITA’s potential role in equipping artisans with specialised skills in Welding and Fabrication, Electrical Installation, Plumbing and Pipe-fitting, among other technical disciplines essential to industrial construction and plant operations.
Beyond skills training, NITA is expected to contribute to curriculum development to ensure that training programmes align with the technical requirements of the nuclear power programme and emerging industry needs. This presents an opportunity to strengthen the capacity of local training institutions to prepare a skilled workforce capable of supporting major national infrastructure projects.
The team also expressed particular interest in NITA Kisumu’s Boiler Operation training, noting similarities in the operating principles of boilers and power plants. The Centre’s existing training capacity could therefore provide a valuable foundation for developing relevant competencies to support the proposed nuclear power plant.
The engagement highlights the importance of aligning technical and vocational education and training with emerging opportunities in the energy sector. Through industry-responsive training, curriculum development and strategic partnerships, NITA can help strengthen local industrial capacity, expand employment opportunities for skilled Kenyans and support the country’s long-term energy development objectives.
