What happens when opportunity meets access to identity—and new customers walk through the door? 👞

When Espoir welcomed distinguished guests to his shop—including Gunilla Carlsson Carlson, Chair of the Sida Board, and H.E. Håkan Åkesson, Swedish Ambassador to Kenya—it was more than a high-level visit. It showed what’s possible when access, partnerships, and determination come together.

With a Refugee ID, Espoir has formally registered his shoe business—once out of reach. Today, he’s going beyond selling shoes: attracting new customers, expanding his network, creating jobs, and contributing to Kenya’s economy. 💼

The visit reflects how Sweden’s support—through the SDACKED project, implemented by the Danish Refugee Council—translates into real local impact. It also shows how partnerships don’t just help businesses start; they help them grow by opening doors to new relationships and markets.

Because when refugees gain formal identification, they can:
→ open bank accounts
→ sign leases
→ build businesses

Progress starts when opportunity is unlocked. 🌍

☀️ Malaba Border Goes Solar: A Step Toward Greener Trade

Recently, the Embassy of Sweden marked an important milestone at the Malaba One-Stop Border Post — one of the region’s busiest trade gateways — now powered by clean, solar energy.

Ambassador Håkan Åkesson joined leaders from Busia County and the Kenya Revenue Authority to celebrate this achievement and explore how partnerships can unlock smarter, more sustainable trade across Kenya and the wider region.

Through Sweden’s support via to the KETEI Programme, implemented by TradeMark Africa, this project is helping to:
✅ Strengthen border operations
✅ Reduce reliance on diesel
✅ Advance climate-smart infrastructure
✅ Serve as a model for green trade solutions across East Africa

Partnerships like this show how sustainability and economic growth can go hand in hand 🤝

We are proud to contribute to a more sustainable, efficient, and integrated regional trade landscape.

Kenyan counties and Swedish municipalities are working together to strengthen sustainable urban development and local democracy. Through the International Centre for Local Democracy (ICLD), Sweden supports these partnerships and exchanges between them. 🇸🇪🇰🇪

It was great to meet representatives from Arvika and Norrköping municipalities, who came to the Embassy this week as part of their programme in Kenya. Their exchange with counties in the Council of Governors-Kenya G7 Women Governors Caucus is advancing water, sanitation, waste management, and inclusive governance.
