🇧🇪🇲🇬 Our consular services depend greatly on our Honorary Consuls. Mr. Charles Van Der Straeten, Honorary Consul in Antananarivo, has been the contact person for the Belgian citizens in Madagascar for many years. Ambassador Maddens thanked Mr. Van Der Straeten for his great work and friendship during the consular mission this week. During this mission, deputy consul Mme Carmen Mazijn met with around 70 Belgians who needed a new passport or identity card, or had questions regarding Belgian family law. See you again next year! 👋

Charles Van Der Straeten, consul honoraire à Antananarivo, est depuis de nombreuses années l'interlocuteur privilégié des citoyens belges à Madagascar. L'ambassadeur Maddens a remercié M. Van Der Straeten pour son excellent travail et son amitié lors de la mission consulaire de cette semaine. Au cours de cette mission, la consule adjointe, Mme Carmen Mazijn, a rencontré environ 70 Belges ayant besoin d'un nouveau passeport ou d'une carte d'identité, ou qui avaient des questions concernant le droit de la famille belge. Ambassadeur Maddens bedankte de heer Van Der Straeten voor zijn uitstekende werk en vriendschap tijdens de consulaire missie van deze week. Tijdens deze missie ontmoette plaatsvervangend consul mevrouw Carmen Mazijn rond de 70 Belgen die een nieuw paspoort of identiteitskaart nodig hadden, of vragen hadden over het Belgische familierecht. Tot volgend jaar! 👋

🌍 The International Day of Zero Waste highlights the importance of bolstering waste management and the need to promote sustainable consumption and production patterns to address the waste pollution crisis.🗑

The Embassy of Belgium in Nairobi is proud to contribute to this cause by collecting food waste to feed two biodigesters.

🦠A biodigester is a sealed container where microorganisms break down organic material into biogas and fertilizer through a natural process. This anaerobic digestion process is possible because the biodigester creates an oxygen-free environment where bacteria can consume the waste and thrive.

The produced biogas is then used for cooking and heating water at the Embassy and Residence.

Madagascar, severely affected by several cyclones, has requested assistance, and Belgium is responding to this call via B-FAST by delivering basic necessities to support the already vulnerable population.

Through the European Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM), B-FAST responded quickly and provided the requested emergency aid. This consists of mattresses, blankets, and camp beds. In total, B-FAST will send approximately 10 tons of material, equivalent to 82m3, to Madagascar.

B-FAST (Belgian First Aid and Support Team) is the structure of the federal government that is activated when providing emergency aid abroad.

🇧🇪The Embassy of Belgium and the 🇰🇪Office of the Special Envoy on Technology of the Republic of Kenya hosted the second assembly of the TechPlomacy Connective.

💡The round table focused on the Resolution on the Environmental Sustainability of Systems and reflects our shared commitment to move beyond dialogue towards concrete partnerships that advance both the use of AI for environmental protection and the sustainability of AI systems themselves. Participants from government, multilateral organisations, the private sector, and academia explored practical collaboration on green AI governance, environmental data interoperability, and equitable access to the AI stack for environmental applications. We concluded that more needs to be done but that the ambition and eagerness are present!
