The inaugural Global Congress for Linear Infrastructure and Environment.
The Endangered Wildlife Trust and the International Conference on Ecology and Transportation, otherwise known as ICOET, hosted the Global Congress for Linear Infrastructure and Environment virtually on 20-21 September. With over 100 delegates from around the world, the Congress aims to build upon the achievements of the continental conferences for linear infrastructure (which includes rail, roads, power lines, pipelines, and canals) and develop tools (e.g., scientific briefs on particular topics) for influencing global decisions-makers to aim for more sustainable new and existing linear infrastructure.
By bringing together a diverse range of participants from across the world, GCLIE is fostering a community of practice that will collectively answer some of the most challenging questions of our time.

We’re onto the final day of the African Conference for Linear Infrastructure and Ecology, with today’s theme being “Applying Economic Tools and Finance for reducing Environmental Impacts”.
What does this mean?
There are several critical points in the life of a linear infrastructure (i.e. roads, rail powerlines etc.) project reliant on funds for securing effective mitigation of environmental impacts. Once a project has is approved, financing for mitigation is a critical determinant for positive ecological outcomes. However, the question in many projects is not whether there is sufficient finance for mitigation and ongoing monitoring, but rather how this finance is spent. Presentations today included how we can be more effective in planning a railway in Kenya through the design of roadkill smartphone apps to obtain wildlife road mortality data to assist us with our understanding.
Thank you to Africa Massive - Events & Travel Company for their logistical support, the presenters and attendees, the organising committee, and Dr Rodney van der Ree and Dr Faser Shilling for the donation of the prizes.

Day 3 of ACLIE 2021
Today’s theme is Planning for Sn*******ng and Cumulative Impacts
Many of the new infrastructure development corridors being planned and constructed on the African continent are composed of parallel linear infrastructure projects, including railways, roads, powerlines, pipelines, fences, and ICT infrastructure. Assessment of cumulative environmental impact requires strengthening in many contexts to enable informed decision-making in terms of mitigation. Coordinating these types of parallel projects can be particularly complex from a mitigation perspective, especially with project-to-project variation in timelines and engineering requirements.
Some of our presentations include how we can create connectivity for our wildlife across a busy highway in Kenya to how there are synergies and opportunities for work undertaken in Europe to have similar models in Africa

ACLIE 2019
ACLIE invites professionals and students to submit abstracts for oral presentations, posters and workshops at its 2019 Conference which will take place in Kruger National Park, South Africa.
Centered around the theme Building Partnerships and investing in nature: the linear way in Africa, the conference will focus on the intersection of people and linear infrastructure, specifically how both people and nature are connected along, across and between different types of infrastructure.
