COMFUND WEATHER CHANNEL: RAINS ARE INBOUND, PREPARE TO PRUNE YOUR COFFEE/ CASHEWNUT TREES THEREAFTER

As per Kenya Meteorological Department's weather report, the 2026 March- April – May (MAM) rains season is underway. As a result, crops such as coffee and cashew nuts are expected to develop tall and wide branches, putting up a bushy canopies.

Such a bushy canopy prevents sunlight from getting into important sections of the plant. Sunlight is a key component that enables plant to make its food through photosynthesis process, as well as killing some microbes that reside under the shades of branches, therefore reducing harmful pests and diseases. Secondly, bushy canopy prevents air circulation within the branches of the coffee or cashew nuts bush.

This is why it is highly recommended to periodically prune your coffee or cashew nut crop. Pruning involves getting rid of unnecessary coffee or cashew nut tree branches. By pruning, you increase the ability of the sunlight reaching all ‘dark’ corners of the coffee/ cashew nuts plant, while improving aeration.

This enables the plant to develop new, healthy branches that have been found to increase flowering, hence improving productivity (amount of coffee or cashew nuts produce per single tree) and production (overall produce of the coffee/ cashew nuts crop on your farm).

At the same time, you help to manage pests and diseases, since sunlight can easily pe*****te through. Even when you are spraying pesticides or foliar fertilizer, you are able to easily reach all parts of the coffee or cashew nut tree, due to increased spacing between the branches.

During the March-April- May Rain season, mature coffee and cashew nuts crop plants that are not in production are bound to develop bushy, unwanted branches all over. As a farmer, you are highly advised to undertake pruning within recommended calendar of activities for both coffee and Cashew nuts crops.

COMFUND WEATHER: M-A-M RAINS STARTS IN THE SECOND WEEK OF MARCH – GET READY TO ESTABLISH YOUR NEW COFFEE FARM!

The March–April–May (MAM) 2026 Long Rains Seasonal Climate Outlook by the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) indicates that the rains will start in earnest as from the second week of March.

The report indicates that several parts of the country are likely to experience near-average to below-average rainfall, with variability in onset, distribution, and intensity.

The coffee farmers in most parts of the country depend on this rain season to establish new coffee farms or to change the crop cycle.

Any farmer intending to establish new coffee is advised to prepare holes during this month of February, as per recommended standard. This would ensure that the holes are well-exposed to current sunshine, which aids in destroying harmful microbes, which cures such holes before planting a coffee seedling.

This requires financing.

NAIROBI COFFEE EXCHANGE SALE 15 SALE ORDER OF SEASON 2025/2026

The Nairobi Coffee Exchange is set for another busy trading session today with Sale 15 listing 39,853 bags across 1,241 lots. Volumes remain strong as coffee continues to flow steadily into the auction system.

Although slightly lower than Sale 14’s provisional listing of over 40,000 bags, Sale 15 still ranks among the largest auctions of the season and will test buyer appetite once again, especially after last week’s final traded volume settled well below initial listings.

INCREASE COFFEE PRODUCTION, KERICHO FARMERS ADVISED

COMMODITIES FUND'S MANAGING TRUSTEE/ CEO, Ms. Nancy Cheruiyot today led a farmers Engagement at Kichawir FCS.

Ms. Cheruiyot, who was representing the Agriculture Principal Secretary, Dr. Paul Ronoh, PhD urged the farmers in Kericho East to increase their coffee output.

Kichawir Farmers Society, with membership of over 2400 coffee producers launched its fourth Factory in November last year, an event that was officiated by PS Ronoh.

PS Ronoh had aslo donated over 60,000 coffee seedlings to the Society's farmers who are drawn from kipkelion East Constituency's 3 wards and one ward in Kipkelion West Constituency.
