A waterfall, in the middle of Nairobi. No, we’re not in Karura. Today the embassy team was hosted by World Waternet, the embassy team visited the work they’re doing along the Mathare river. A range of activities aimed at bringing people and organisations together to jointly shift from a system that tends to forget the river, to one where she’s on all our minds and becomes an attraction. We saw that potential today!

Every year, on May 22nd, we celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity. On this date, back in 1992, the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was adopted. This Convention has proven to be - and still is - the most authoritative source of multilateral output regarding the conservation, protection and enhancement of biological diversity.

The Netherlands is an active party to this Convention, and works diligently to implement the resolutions, decisions and frameworks adopted under it. Given the cross-cutting nature of the biodiversity loss crisis, we need multilateral cooperation, such as under the CBD, to address common challenges and ensure that we work together, hand-in-hand, to make sure that the foundation on which we all depend, continues to thrive.

Alot of valuable insights from interactions with community members, government representatives and private sector actors. This week’s mission to Isiolo county brought together two NL funded programs active in the county; RVO locally led program (RtF), and EKN market systems development program (RANGE). Discussions explored strategic synergies on market and policy linkages through strengthening; local commercially viable opportunities, community structures and the enabling policy environment. We look forward to the two programs strategically reinforcing each other’s operations, as they jointly address identified shared limiting constraints on water scarcity and land registration.

Karibu sana Joy!

My name is Dorin Joy Nyawira Gicuku.

I’m honored to join the embassy team in Nairobi as the Residence and Private Chef👩🏽‍🍳to the Ambassador. My role keeps me in the heart of a fast-paced commercial kitchen, where I plan and prepare meals for the Ambassador, visiting dignitaries, and official residence events.

What drives me most is the creative energy of the kitchen 🍽️. Having a boss who’s eager to taste cuisines from around the world and gives honest feedback on what to improve pushes me to refine recipes and try bold new flavors every day.

Right now, I’m working on fresh recipes for upcoming residence events and crafting a new menu for the Ambassador that balances innovation with comfort.

Outside of work, I’m an adventure traveler ✈️ who loves exploring new places. I’m always reading cookbooks, watching culinary programs, and I unwind with a swim whenever I can 🏊🏽‍♀️.

What I love about Nairobi so far is the incredible diversity and the chance to interact with people from so many backgrounds. The cool, serene environment around Karura Forest 🌳 is an added bonus.

💫 Yesterday we had the pleasure of spending the day with Mary Simprose, student in International Relations.

Mary joined Ambassador Bakker in the Pan African Media Summit and came to the Embassy for engagements with various colleagues, giving her insight into the daily practice of diplomacy.

We couldn’t agree more with her reflections on the day:

🗣️ I have learned that it’s all about having a team that supports you to make the dream work.
