Kenya Deposit Insurance Corporation KDIC is a state corporation established in July 2014 to protect your deposits in the banks

KDIC is a statutory institution established under the Kenya Deposit Insurance Act, 2012 (KDI Act, 2012). The Corporation is mandated to provide a deposit insurance scheme for customers of member institutions, to provide incentives for sound risk management and generally promote the stability of the financial system and prompt resolution. Further, KDIC protects depositors against the loss of all their deposits or bank balance in the unlikely event of a bank failure. To this end, the Corporation provides payments of insured deposits thereby enhancing the confidence of depositors, thus inspiring them to keep their savings within the insured banking and payments system. The Corporation was established in response to challenges presented by banking crises and bank failures in the country. Since its inception, KDIC has lived up to its mandate in the over thirty years of existence. The main functions of KDIC are to:

Provide a deposit insurance scheme for customers of member institutions
Provide incentives for sound risk management
Promptly resolve problem banks in order to proactively mitigate any failure

Last week, the Kenya Deposit Insurance Corporation (KDIC), in partnership with Toronto Centre, hosted the Risk Minimization and Deposit Insurance Programme from 21st to 25th September 2026.

The five-day programme brought together participants for practical and insightful learning on Risk-Based Supervision (RBS) of banks, Early Warning Systems, and effective communication and stakeholder engagement all important to strengthening financial sector resilience and maintaining confidence in the financial system.

We are grateful to Toronto Centre for delivering a rich and engaging learning experience, facilitated by Floris Fleermuys, David Walker and Robert Urry. The sessions provided an opportunity to exchange experiences, challenge our thinking and reflect on how we can continuously strengthen our approaches to risk minimisation and deposit insurance.

The programme concluded with a virtual presentation of certificates, marking another step in our collective commitment to continuous learning, professional development and a stronger financial safety net.

KDIC joined students at the Finance and Investments Students' Association (FISA) 1st Year Breakfast, held at the University of Nairobi’s School of Business on 16th September 2026.

The forum explored career development, financial literacy and workplace readiness, while highlighting the value of strong university-industry partnerships in equipping students with the skills and exposure needed to navigate an evolving job market.

Representing KDIC, Martin Mwai, Assistant Director, Finance, shared insights on the Corporation’s mandate and the changing dynamics of Kenya’s financial sector, shaped by technology, evolving customer needs and emerging business models.

He reminded students that while academic qualifications provide a strong foundation, practical skills, professionalism, reliability and communication are equally important in the workplace. He encouraged them to embrace continuous learning, seek practical exposure and keep building skills that enhance their employability.

At KDIC, we believe that investing in knowledge, skills and meaningful industry engagement today helps shape a more capable workforce for tomorrow.

Congratulations to the Central Bank of Kenya (Official) on 60 Remarkable Years of Service.

As the Central Bank of Kenya marks 60 years of dedicated service to the nation, the Kenya Deposit Insurance Corporation (KDIC) extends its heartfelt congratulations on this significant milestone.

For six decades, the Central Bank has played a defining role in shaping Kenya's economic journey through sound monetary policy, promoting a stable market-based financial system, ensuring efficient payment systems, and maintaining public confidence in the country's financial sector. CBK's leadership has laid a strong foundation for a resilient and inclusive banking system that continues to support Kenya's growth and prosperity.

At KDIC, we are proud to work alongside the Central Bank as part of Kenya's financial safety net. While CBK promotes financial stability through regulation, supervision, and monetary policy, KDIC complements this mandate by protecting depositors, resolving problem banks, and helping maintain confidence in the banking sector. Together, our shared mission is to safeguard the stability, resilience, and integrity of Kenya's financial system.

As you celebrate CBK@60, we honour your legacy of excellence and partnership, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration in building a stronger, safer, and more resilient financial future for all Kenyans.

Hellen Chepkwony

Last week, Kenya Deposit Insurance Corporation (KDIC) supported Weithaga Bible and Technical College in Murang’a County with a donation of 15 computers to strengthen learning and expand opportunities for students.

The college, led by Principal Bernard Kamau, trains ministers while also equipping young people with practical technical skills. With computer-related courses now part of its programmes and plans underway to expand its training offering, access to technology is an important step towards preparing students for an increasingly digital world.

The donated computers will support teaching and learning while enabling students to build their digital skills, access online learning resources and explore new opportunities beyond the classroom.

This is part of KDIC’s commitment, under the leadership of our CEO, Mrs. Hellen Chepkwony, to make a meaningful difference in the communities we serve. While our core mandate is to protect depositors and contribute to financial system stability, we recognise that stronger communities are built when people have the knowledge, skills and opportunities to thrive.

At Weithaga, it was encouraging to see an institution investing in both faith and skills development and KDIC is proud to play a part in that journey.

KDIC was represented by Kennedy Yegon, Deputy Director, ICT; Sarah Gatwiri, Deputy Director, Corporate Communications; Byron Ouma and Zawadi Mwikali from the ICT Department.

Because when we equip people with knowledge and technology, we are not just supporting learning, we are helping open doors to a better future.

The future of Kenya’s credit market will not be built by one institution. It will be shaped by the strength of the connections, collaboration and cooperation among players across the financial sector.

As Kenya’s financial sector continues to evolve, collaboration is essential. Stronger partnerships among regulators, financial institutions, credit reference bureaus and other stakeholders can help build a credit market that is more resilient, inclusive and trusted.

Together, we can strengthen a credit market that inspires confidence, promotes responsible lending and supports sustainable economic growth.

The Chief Executive Officer of Mbagathi County Referral Hospital, Dr. Alexander Irungu, PhD, today paid a courtesy visit to KDIC Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Hellen Chepkwony, accompanied by Dr. Pius Kinuthia, Head of Pharmacy, and Dr. Beatrice Mwangi, Deputy Medical Superintendent (ENT). In attendance was David Irungu, Director, Bank Resolution and Chair of Philanthropic Committee at KDIC and Everlyne Silong, Senior Communications Officer KDIC

The visit was an opportunity to express appreciation for the longstanding partnership between KDIC and Mbagathi Hospital, particularly through the Corporation’s philanthropy and CSR initiatives.

Over the years, KDIC has supported the hospital through donations of medical equipment, construction of essential shelters and tree-planting initiatives, contributing to a better environment for patients and healthcare workers.

The impact is what makes the partnership meaningful: mothers receiving quality care, improved working conditions for medical teams and better outcomes for newborns and the wider community.

Both teams reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening the partnership and exploring more ways to support Mbagathi Hospital and the community it serves.

Partnerships that improve lives are partnerships worth nurturing.
