DIGITAL LITERACY PROGRAMME PHASE II ROLLOUT LAUNCHED IN NAIROBI COUNTY
The Digital Literacy Programme (DLP) Phase II device rollout for Nairobi County was today launched at Lenana Primary School, marking another milestone in the Government’s drive to integrate technology into teaching and learning in public Junior Schools.
Principal Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy Eng. John Tanui led the launch, joined by Hon. John Kiarie, MP for Dagoretti South and Chairperson of the National Assembly Committee on Communication, Information and Innovation, and ICT Authority CEO Mr. Jessy Maruti, alongside education and government stakeholders.
Implemented by the ICT Authority under the Kenya Digital Economy Acceleration Project (KDEAP), the programme is supporting the deployment of teacher laptops and interactive smart boards to 10,382 public Junior Schools across all 47 counties.
In Nairobi County, devices have been delivered to all 98 targeted schools, with installation, inspection and acceptance completed in 91 schools, representing a 92.9 per cent completion rate. Schools in Dagoretti South Constituency, including Lenana Primary School, are among those benefiting from the rollout.
Beyond the deployment of devices, the programme seeks to deepen the meaningful use of technology in education by equipping teachers with the skills and tools required to integrate digital learning into the classroom. The national rollout has therefore been complemented by teacher training to strengthen teachers’ capacity and confidence in using technology to enhance learning.
The initiative forms part of the Government’s broader digital transformation agenda, which includes expanding connectivity and digital infrastructure, strengthening digital skills and increasing access to technology across the country.
As emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence, increasingly reshape economies and workplaces, the programme is helping build an early foundation for digital literacy, creativity, problem-solving and technological skills among learners.
Through the Digital Literacy Programme, the Government is working to prepare learners not only to use technology, but also to participate meaningfully in a digital economy offering opportunities in areas such as software development, cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, business process outsourcing and other technology-enabled careers.
