I am proud to be a forester, and over the years I have drawn some of the most powerful life lessons from a tree.
A tree grows in two directions at the same time - upward and downward.
The part that grows upward is drawn to the light. Scientists call this phototropism. It is the visible part: the branches, the leaves, the flowers, and eventually the fruit. It is what people admire.
But at the same time, another part of the tree grows downward into the soil. This is gravitropism. It grows away from the light, into darkness, through damp soil and resistance. It pushes through stones and compact ground — unseen, uncelebrated, but absolutely essential.
Interestingly, this downward journey often begins first.
Before a tree can rise into the light, it must first learn to grow in the dark.
Yet when people admire a tree, they rarely speak about the roots.
Life is no different.
Many admire the phototropic side of your life — the visible success, the achievements, the leadership roles, the fruits. But very few see the gravitropic journey — the struggles, the quiet discipline, the resistance you pushed through, and the foundations built when no one was watching.
Nature reminds us of a simple truth:
The strength we see above the ground is sustained by the work done below it.
So when you admire someone’s fruits, remember — long before the branches reached the light, the roots were patiently growing in the dark.
Never admire the fruits without respecting the roots.

Last week I had the privilege of joining a small group of global experts at the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center on the beautiful shores of Lake Como, Italy, for an important dialogue on Digital Sequence Information (DSI) and nature finance in Africa.
The discussions focused on a powerful question: How can Africa capture fair value from its extraordinary biodiversity in the rapidly growing global bioeconomy?
Africa hosts nearly 25% of the world’s biodiversity, yet the continent captures only a small share of the economic value generated from the genetic resources that support industries such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, agriculture, and cosmetics.
What became clear is that Digital Sequence Information — the digital genetic data derived from biodiversity — is emerging as a new frontier of natural capital and innovation. With the right governance, investment, and partnerships, Africa has a real opportunity not only to conserve its biodiversity but also to participate meaningfully in the global bioeconomy.
Grateful for the rich conversations, the inspiring setting, and the shared commitment to ensuring that Africa’s natural capital works for both people and planet. 🌍🌿

I had the privilege of attending the launch of a book by Young Baraka, a 13-year-old environmental & climate champion inspiring young people to care for our planet.
At his age, Baraka has already planted 7,600 trees and is mobilizing others through his message and writing. During the event, I shared a simple reality: an average person breathes about 1 kg of oxygen per day, which requires at least seven mature trees.
Baraka captured it perfectly:
“Please stop stealing my oxygen… plant your own.”
Across the country, collective restoration efforts by communities and partners have already seen over 44.6 million trees planted, showing what is possible when people come together for nature.
Young champions like Baraka remind us that protecting the environment is about purpose, responsibility, and action. Let us all play our part in restoring nature and securing a greener future.

In life, we are often guided by two powerful forces: fear and hope. Hope inspires us to dream, to take risks, and to believe in possibilities beyond our present circumstances. Fear, however, speaks more loudly. It magnifies uncertainty, questions our courage, and too often convinces us to step back when we should move forward. While hope builds the future, fear protects us from the unknown — and because of that, it can easily become the stronger voice. True growth comes when we recognise fear for what it is, acknowledge it, and still choose to let hope lead our decisions.

Honoured to pay a courtesy call on H.E. Mutula Kilonzo Jr, Governor of Makueni county, a brother I have walked with through demanding seasons, standing together when it mattered most. Our reconnection was a reminder that strong bonds are forged through loyalty, shared burdens, and showing up for each other when the road is heavy or otherwise. Grateful for the time, the laughter, and the renewed sense of purpose as we keep serving.

All life shares the same breath — the beast, the tree, the man. The air carries its spirit to every living thing, reminding us to honor each other, respect nature, and live in harmony. And if life gives you a hundred reasons to cry, show it your thousand reasons to smile...
