The government of Tanzania plans to boost cotton export to $150 million by 2020, up from the current $30 million, the deputy minister of agriculture, Ms. Mary Mwanjelwa, has said. Ms. Mwanjelwa said that during the 2018 campaign, growers will use seeds from the UKM08 improved variety developed by Ukiriguru Research Institute. According to information relayed by Xinhua, the government has set since 2007, a battery of measures as to bring the cotton output to 6000,000 tones.

The Open Institute is implementing activities under the Nakuru North Farmers Data Development project as one of the Africa Lead/ CNC Small Grants Program grantees. Through this project Open Institute aims to achieve two main changes in the society: ensuring that government is proactively open as regards its contributions to its business regarding development and to give value to citizen voices - so that citizens have influence in their decision making. The CNC joined the Open Institute on a field trip to Nakuru North on 9th July 2018 to visit farmers and comprehend the challenges they were facing and the progress being made to collect data related to their farm practices.
