As a nation, we must uphold these constitutional guarantees and ensure that every woman and child is safe, protected, and able to live free from fear and violence.

Earlier today, UGM Party Presidential Flagbearer David Maraga made a brief stop in Nairobi's CBD to engage with a few of them and listen to the challenges they face while building livelihoods through their creativity and enterprise.

Kenya has woken up to the devastating news of a fire outbreak last night at Utumishi Girls that has claimed young lives and left several students injured.

Our prayers are with the affected families, students, and the entire school community during this painful time. No parent should ever lose a child in a place meant for learning and protection.

This tragedy painfully reminds the country of past school fire disasters, including the 2001 Kyanguli tragedy that claimed 67 students, the 2017 Moi Girls fire that claimed 10 students, and the 2024 Endarasha tragedy where 21 children lost their lives. Kenya has faced these painful moments before, yet the same concerns around safety and emergency preparedness continue to arise.

Schools must remain places of safety, and school safety must be a national priority.

Kenya already has school safety and emergency preparedness guidelines in place. The government and all relevant authorities must now move with urgency to fully enforce these standards, conduct regular compliance inspections, and ensure accountability in every boarding institution across the country to prevent the continued loss of young lives.

The UGM Party and Presidential Flagbearer David Maraga join the nation in mourning the young lives lost and praying for the full recovery of those injured.
