Macheo Children's Organization Macheo is an NGO based in Thika, Kenya.Macheo's purpose:CREATING A FAIRER FUTURE FOR KENYAS CHILDREN. Macheo is an NGO based in Thika, Kenya.

Macheo cares for Kenyan children. That is why we were founded in the first place. We care for all children, the ones we are able to help but also the ones who are waiting for us to be helped. That drives us to constantly try to maximize impact for all with the scarce resources we have. We believe it is right to approach the complex situations in a holistic and broad way: What are the challenges? What is causing these challenges? What can be done to address root causes? Who is best placed to provide these services? And how do we know in the end whether the solutions worked?

A toilet block is more than a structure. For a girl at school, it means dignity, privacy, better hygiene and a more comfortable learning environment.

Macheo Children’s Organisation, in partnership with Macheo US and Kisitimani Primary School, has officially handed over a newly constructed girls’ toilet block to improve sanitation and support learners’ well-being.

During the handover, Headteacher John Bosco Nzomo Kioko highlighted the importance of the project:

“Support to the construction of girls’ toilets is more than building a structure. It is an investment in the dignity of our girls, their confidence and their future.”

The need for improved sanitation was identified through Join for Joy, a sports, games and skills development intervention, through its service provider, Ruth.

Faith Kanyi from Projects and Procurement emphasised the importance of school ownership and maintaining the facility, while Mary Nzembi, Macheo’s Education and Skills Coordinator, reaffirmed our commitment to protecting children and ensuring they have the resources they need to learn and grow.

From school feeding and sports to skills development and essential infrastructure, we believe every child deserves a safe and supportive environment.

We thank Macheo USA, Kisitimani Primary School, Join for Joy and everyone who made this project possible.

Here’s to safer schools, improved sanitation and brighter futures for our children!

Don't sit on your skills. Start small, grow steadily, and believe in your ability to build a future.

Today, we celebrated the graduation of Cohort 23 of Macheo’s Youth Employability Program (YEP), marking another milestone in our commitment to equipping young people with the skills, knowledge and confidence to become self-reliant.

Beyond practical skills, the program also emphasised the importance of mental health, with training facilitated by child mental health counsellors. The sessions encouraged the youth to speak up, seek support and recognise the importance of their mental well-being as they work towards their goals.

Julius Muasya, the YEP Overseer, encouraged the graduates to save and put into practice the skills they had acquired during the training. One graduate expressed gratitude to Macheo, hoping the program would continue transforming the lives of other young people. Another reflected on their journey, sharing, “I was idle, but now I can use my skills to earn a living.”

The graduates shared their ambitions and plans for the future. One had already started a business and looked forward to using her newly acquired skills to grow it. Another highlighted the importance of marketing in promoting her business and invited her fellow graduates to support it.

Alumni’s also shared valuable lessons from their journeys: believe in yourself, remain willing to learn, do not sit on your skills, and do not be afraid to start small. One alumni shared how she used the skills gained through YEP to earn pocket money while in high school by helping her fellow students. Her experience was a reminder that opportunities can begin with the simple decision to put your skills to use.

Sarah Mbira, Macheo’s Managing Director, further challenged the graduates to recognise and utilise their different assets, including the assets of the mind, social capital and the heart, showing them how these resources can help them navigate challenges and create opportunities.

The message was clear: you do not have to start big to make progress. Start with what you have, use what you have learned, and keep growing.

Macheo has continued to empower young people through the Youth Employability Program , helping them build the skills and confidence to pursue employment, grow businesses and create opportunities for themselves. For Cohort 23, graduation is not the end of the journey. It is the beginning of putting their skills into action and building their future, one step at a time.

When communities are empowered, they create an environment where children can grow, learn, thrive and reach their full potential.

Macheo hosted a practical learning session to strengthen the knowledge and skills of Trainers of Trainers (ToTs) from Macheo, Community Savings and Loan Groups (CSLGs) from Ruiru, and Matunda Development CBO.

Facilitated by financial consultant Fridah Mwende, the training covered financial literacy, record keeping, savings, loans, interest rates, loan repayment, group dynamics, conflict management, audits and dividend sharing.

Participants gained practical skills in maintaining financial records, managing savings and loans, responsible borrowing, resolving conflicts and strengthening accountability. The importance of a group constitution was also emphasised to guide savings, loans, welfare funds, shares, fines and other group decisions.

The session explored behaviours that strengthen groups, including participation, transparency, respect, listening, accountability and teamwork, as well as behaviours that can weaken them, such as domination, favouritism, poor attendance and withholding information. Participants also learned practical ways to manage conflict through listening, understanding, discussion, agreement and follow-up.

Macheo Managing Director Sarah Mbira emphasised the importance of financial literacy and encouraged participants to continue learning and building their knowledge.

Importantly, the ToTs will take these skills back to their respective groups and communities, training and supporting others to strengthen their financial knowledge and group management skills. This creates a ripple effect, allowing knowledge to reach more community members and strengthening community ownership.

As the facilitator reminded participants:
“Every personality has a strength; the goal is to create balance.”

At Macheo, we believe that empowered communities build stronger futures for children. When communities have the knowledge and skills to manage resources, make informed decisions and work together, they are better equipped to create a supportive environment where children can grow, learn, thrive and reach their full potential.

“When a child needs treatment, sometimes the medicine is only part of the solution.”

For Lilian Wairimu, a Nutritionist at Gachororo Level 3 Hospital, supporting a child whose family is experiencing food insecurity can be challenging.

This is where collaboration with Macheo Children’s Organisation makes a difference.

During our recent donation of medical and nutritional supplies to Gachororo Level 3 Hospital, Lilian shared how Macheo’s support helps bridge some of the gaps families face. The donation included child spacer inhalers, Calcimax syrup, Wellbaby Vitamin D, Abidec Multivitamin drops, Montiget sachets, Wellbaby Multivitamin, Floranorm, Ascoril, Pregnacare and Astymin.

But Macheo’s support goes beyond medical supplies. When health workers identify families facing food insecurity and other vulnerabilities, they can refer cases to Macheo’s social workers for assessment. Families may then be connected to interventions such as economic empowerment, psychosocial support, cash transfers, improved living conditions, among many other interventions. helping address some of the underlying challenges affecting their health and nutrition.

As Lilian puts it, supporting a patient experiencing food insecurity requires more than what the hospital can provide.

Watch Lilian share her experience working with Macheo and why this partnership matters.

“What happens if you earn one million and spend one million?”

It was one of the questions that shifted the conversation in the room today.
Karwitha Wanjiru (Julie) MSc, CPA-K, Macheo Children’s Organisation’s Manager, Social Work and Needs Assessment, had a simple response:

“You are still poor.”

Today, members of Matunda Development Community Based Organisation (CBO) were challenged to look at money differently. The financial management session, centred on “Principles, Habits and Your Financial Plan”, went beyond budgeting. It was about mindset, habits and the everyday decisions that shape financial stability.

The conversation began with money myths, creating space for participants to reflect on how they think about earning, spending, saving and borrowing.
From there, the questions became practical.
Are you spending less than you earn?
Do you rely on one source of income?
What happens when an unexpected expense comes?
Are your debts taking you deeper into a financial hole?
What can you do to improve your cash flow?
And who can you trust to review your budget and challenge your financial decisions?

Participants were given Financial Action Plan workbooks to turn the conversation into practical steps. They worked through money mindset, visible success versus invisible habits, budgeting, paying yourself first, debt tracking, emergency funds, a 12-month farm income plan, compounding, SMART goals and personal financial action plans.

The session was not only about learning but also about stopping, reflecting and asking: What am I doing with the money I have, and what can I do differently? Today’s training is part of Macheo’s ongoing capacity-building support to Matunda Development CBO, following earlier sessions on child care and protection, positive parenting and sustainable agriculture.

Each session adds another layer of knowledge and practical skills that can strengthen households and community-led development.
Development is not only about access to resources. It is also about having the knowledge, skills and confidence to make informed decisions about the future.
Sometimes, a mindset shift is where change begins.

In our lives, the ordinary moments are the ones children will remember for a lifetime.

On Monday, the atmosphere at Macheo Children’s Organisation was different. The hall was quiet. Heavy.
Our staff gathered with the children for Holy Mass, offered as a Requiem Mass for the repose of the soul of the mother of two children currently in our care at Temporary Residential Care.

Today, their mother was laid to rest.

During the Mass, Fr Charles Thumbi reflected on a moment from a year ago, when he baptised one of the children at the church where the children attend Sunday Mass, at Engineering Station under the Military Ordinariate Diocese.

His reflection brought a deeply human perspective to the loss.

Through the lives of these two children, he said, we can see something of their mother's goodness. He reminded us that the hope of heaven is not only spoken about in terms of holiness, but also in the compassion we show, the good we do and the lives we touch.

He also reminded Macheo staff that the work continues.

When a family loses a mother, the gap left behind is enormous. For the children, it is a loss that will shape their lives in ways we may not yet understand. And for those caring for them, it is a reminder that our work is not simply about providing services. It is about being present when life becomes difficult.

At Macheo, Temporary Residential Care provides children with a safe and caring environment while efforts continue towards family-based care and a secure future. It also gives children space to practise the faith they profess. At intake, children are asked about their faith and religious affiliation, recognising that spiritual identity can be an important part of their lives, families and sense of belonging.

On Monday, our staff did more than attend Mass.

They stood with two children carrying a loss they should never have to carry alone.

And perhaps that is something worth remembering about care work.

A meal prepared with love. A hand held. A prayer said together. A school uniform made ready. A listening ear. A familiar face at the end of a difficult day.

These may seem like ordinary acts to us.

For a child, they can become memories of being cared for.

As we mourn with this family and remember their mother, we invite you to reflect with us:

What are the small acts of care that you remember most from your own childhood? And what can we do today to make sure the children in our care have moments worth remembering?

Share your thoughts with us. And if you believe every child deserves care, dignity, protection and the chance to grow through difficult moments, support Macheo’s work.

What if someone you care about is silently asking for help, but you don’t hear them?
Sometimes, the most important thing you can do is simply start the conversation.

Not every struggle is visible.

In this role play, Macheo’s Mental Health and Psychosocial Support team brings to life a difficult reality: sometimes, a person can feel overwhelmed, exhausted and trapped while those around them may have no idea what they are going through.

The turning point begins when someone notices, reaches out and says, “I am here for you.”

This Su***de Prevention Month, we are encouraging parents, caregivers, teachers, friends and communities to make checking in part of how we care for one another, especially when it comes to children and young people.

You do not need to know exactly what someone is going through to reach out.

Ask how they are doing.

Listen without judgement.

Take their feelings seriously.

Create a safe space for them to speak.

And when more support is needed, help them connect with appropriate professional care.

By creating safe spaces where children can speak openly, listening without judgement and connecting them to appropriate support, we can help children and families navigate difficult moments.

And supporting children goes beyond conversations. Every contribution can help us provide the care, protection, education, health and psychosocial support that children need.

A conversation may not fix everything, but it can remind someone that they do not have to face their pain alone.

Let’s start the conversation. Let’s keep listening. Let’s keep showing up for children.

What does it take to keep a child in school?

A meal. School fees. A uniform. Remedial support. Early childhood development. But beyond these interventions, it takes listening to children, families and schools and involving them in decisions that affect their education.

This week, Macheo Children’s Organisation brought together primary school headteachers for a forum to reflect on education and skills interventions and discuss how these can better respond to the realities facing vulnerable children and their families.

The discussions explored the impact and future of school feeding in 2027, ECD and remedial support, school fee assistance, emerging trends in school feeding, and stronger collaboration between schools, parents and Macheo.

A key message that emerged was the importance of involving parents in decision-making. Sustainable support for vulnerable children requires understanding the realities of families and ensuring that parents are not simply recipients of interventions, but active participants in shaping solutions that affect their children.

Seth Mwangi, Macheo’s Service Delivery Manager, described the important role schools play in identifying children and connecting families to support:

“Schools are a gateway to our interventions.”

He also took participants back to Macheo’s beginnings, when the organisation’s founders, Marnix and Maureen, witnessed children at Kianjau Primary School facing situations where access to food and sanitary towels could leave them vulnerable to exploitation. This experience helped inspire the start of school feeding at Kianjau Primary School, laying the foundation for an intervention that recognised a simple but important reality: when children have access to food and other essential support, some of the barriers keeping them out of school can be addressed.

Today, school feeding remains part of a broader approach to helping vulnerable children stay in school and learn.

Mary Nzembi, Coordinator of the Education and Skills Department at Macheo, helped steer the forum, providing clarity on the organisation’s interventions and facilitating discussions on how support can be made more accessible and affordable for vulnerable children.

Headteachers shared experiences of the difference Macheo’s initiatives have made for learners, while newly engaged school leaders called for stronger collaboration, highlighting the many vulnerable children and families whose needs first become visible through schools.

The forum was a reminder that education is not delivered by schools alone. It is strengthened when schools, parents, communities and organisations work together, share information and make decisions with the realities of children and families at the centre.

As we look towards 2027, these conversations will be important in shaping interventions that are responsive, sustainable and inclusive.

Help keep a child in school.

A new space for dignity, safety and learning.

Macheo Children’s Organisation has officially handed over a newly completed girls’ toilet block to Kimuchu Primary School, helping create a cleaner, safer and more dignified learning environment for girls.

The project was made possible through a partnership between 75 Jaar and Kimuchu Primary School, facilitated through Macheo Children’s Organisation.

During the handover, Mary Nzembi, Coordinator, Education and Skills at Macheo, reaffirmed Macheo’s commitment to enhancing learning environments and ensuring children have spaces that support their wellbeing and learning.

Faith Kanyi from Macheo’s Procurement and Projects Department called on the school, parents and Board members to take responsibility for maintaining the facility and protecting the investment for the children who will use it.

For Elizabeth Ndungu, a member of the School’s Project Management Committee, the project represents more than a new building. It represents dignity for the girls.

“We are glad that Macheo came to improve our infrastructure. You have brought dignity to our girls, and the project is a blessing to us.”

The handover was filled with smiles from children and teachers, celebrating a facility that will make a meaningful difference in their daily school experience. ❤

When we invest in children’s learning environments, we invest in their dignity, wellbeing and future.

A young person equipped with the right skills is better prepared to build their future.

After intensive training, we have celebrated the graduation of Cohort 22 of our Youth Employability Programme, in which 30 young people completed their training.

The youth gained practical skills in areas such as agriculture and agribusiness, computer literacy, CV writing, soap making, entrepreneurship and other soft skills, alongside sessions focused on mental health and personal development. These skills prepare them to pursue both employment and self-employment.

During the graduation, Elizabeth Mwangi, Macheo’s Family Economic Empowerment program Coordinator, encouraged the youth to maintain a positive attitude, develop a saving culture and remain resilient as they navigate the challenges that come with building their futures.

“There is no option for giving up.”

Youth from previous cohorts also shared their experience, encouraging the graduates through their own journey and showing them the possibilities that lie beyond the program.

Parents and program facilitators joined the celebration, congratulating the graduates on their achievement. The joyful occasion brought everyone together to celebrate the milestone.

Since 2022, Macheo has continued to empower young people through the Youth Employability Program, providing them with the skills, knowledge and confidence to become more self-reliant and create opportunities for themselves.

For Cohort 22, graduation is not the end of the journey; it is the beginning of a future they are now better equipped to build.

The momentum is building and you can be part of it by visiting shop.macheo.ngo to support our mission.
