We are pleased to share an update from the 𝐾𝑒𝑛𝑦𝑎 𝐹𝑜𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑦 𝑅𝑒𝑠𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑐ℎ 𝐼𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑢𝑡𝑒 (𝐾𝐸𝐹𝑅𝐼) on its long-standing collaboration with JICA! 📢

Over nearly four decades, this partnership has contributed significantly to advancing forestry and environmental conservation in Kenya's dry and semi-arid lands. 🌱 Through research, capacity development, the production of high-quality tree seedlings 🌳, and improved access to water resources 💧, these efforts have also helped strengthen local livelihoods and climate resilience.

One notable achievement has been the 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲 (𝗧𝗖𝗧𝗣) 🤝, through which forestry and environmental professionals from across Africa 🌍 have come to Kenya to exchange knowledge and share practical experiences in dryland forestry and ecosystem conservation.

During the recent visit, JICA and KEFRI signed the Minutes of Meeting (MM) for a new TCTP that will run from 2026 to 2030 📝. This program will be disseminating knowledge on breeding for indigenous tree species to various Countries across Sub-Saharan Africa, an expertise that KEFRI has developed over the years partly through JICA support. 🌍🌱 In the meeting, two organizations also exchanged views on future collaboration to promote sustainable forest management and climate action across the region.

JICA remains committed to working with Kenya and other African countries to build sustainable and resilient communities through knowledge sharing and partnership. 🌿✨

We are happy to share updates from the Kenya Ministry of Health regarding the 𝑱𝑰𝑪𝑨 𝑺𝑨𝑴𝑨𝑪𝑯 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒋𝒆𝒄𝒕!

To ensure primary health facilities deliver quality healthcare to everyone, having strong management and strategic planning at the county level is essential.
Over the past 5 years, JICA has worked closely with national and county governments deploying tools to:
• 📊 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹-𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 to plan local healthcare services where they are needed most
• 💰 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 (𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻, 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁) 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 so that they go directly to improving health facilities and services
• 🤝 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 for transparent and reliable health services
In a recent meeting with Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni, we reflected on these achievements and discussed how counties can keep using these simple, effective tools in the future.
JICA remains committed to supporting Kenya in making quality healthcare accessible for all! 🏥✨

Kenya continues to record high rates of preventable traffic fatalities, particularly among pedestrians in Nairobi area blackspots. 🚸 Addressing this requires coordinated, evidence-based intervention across multiple institutions, which is the basis of the JICA-supported Safe-System Approach to Road Traffic Accidents project, now in its second year of implementation. 🤝

This week, the 𝐽𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡 𝐶𝑜𝑜𝑟𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝐶𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑖𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑒 (𝐽𝐶𝐶) met to review progress in strengthening road safety through improved accident data systems and coordinated interventions at selected pilot sites. 🏛️📈

Road accidents don't just happen — they can be predicted, prevented, and reduced. 🛡️ Here's an update on the work underway to make our roads safer:

𝐌𝐫. 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐚 shared invaluable lessons from 𝑱𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒏’𝒔 𝑲𝒂𝒊𝒛𝒆𝒏 𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒂𝒄𝒉 in his keynote presentation, emphasizing that sustainable productivity transformation is built on:
✅Continuous improvement (Kaizen culture),
✅Eliminating inefficiencies (muda dori),
✅Strong systems such as 5S, quality control circles, and total quality management and Linking productivity to global value chains, digitalization, and industrial development with on-the-ground initiative.
His global perspective —from Asia to Africa— demonstrated how Kaizen as the approach for quality and productivity improvement can strengthen both public institutions and private sector competitiveness. 🌐📲

𝐄𝐧𝐠. 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐞 reinforced a critical message that Productivity starts with people.
He highlighted that the most important lesson from the Kaizen journey is: 𝐼𝑛𝑣𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑖𝑛 ℎ𝑢𝑚𝑎𝑛 𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑐𝑒 𝑑𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑝𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡, 𝑓𝑜𝑐𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑜𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 ℎ𝑢𝑚𝑎𝑛 𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑜𝑟𝑔𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑧𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑏𝑢𝑖𝑙𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑎 𝑐𝑢𝑙𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑒𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑜𝑦𝑒𝑒𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑒𝑚𝑝𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑑 𝑡𝑜 𝑖𝑚𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑣𝑒 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑠 𝑑𝑎𝑖𝑙𝑦.

Together, their insights underscored that:
✅𝑻𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒏𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒚 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒚𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒔 𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓 — 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒑𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆 𝒅𝒓𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒔𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏

The session also explored how nations like the UK and OECD countries measure productivity, emphasizing the vital importance of:
📊 𝐷𝑎𝑡𝑎-𝑑𝑟𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛 𝑑𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛-𝑚𝑎𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 🧑‍💻
💬 𝐶𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑧𝑒𝑛 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑢𝑠𝑒𝑟 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑑𝑏𝑎𝑐𝑘 🗳️

On June 20, we honor the resilience and courage of refugees worldwide. In Kenya, a historic transition is underway as the government rolls out the 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐤𝐚 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧, shifting away from camp-based dependency toward sustainable, integrated municipalities where refugees and host communities share opportunities and thrive together.

At JICA, we believe true integration can and would be realized by working with both refugees and the host communities that support them. Here is how we are taking concrete action on the ground:

💧 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗸𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲): Partnering with UN-Habitat, we launched a JPY 663 million (Approx. $4.1M / Ksh. 520M) infrastructure project to deliver safe, reliable water to over 45,000 residents and refugees across Kakuma and Lodwar. Beyond building pipeline extensions and solarized boreholes, JICA’s 𝑨𝒅𝒗𝒊𝒔𝒐𝒓 𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒎𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝑯𝒖𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏-𝑫𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒑𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑵𝒆𝒙𝒖𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝑹𝒆𝒇𝒖𝒈𝒆𝒆 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒆 is actively training local water service providers to ensure long-term system sustainability.

📅 On June 4–5, JICA Youth Activities Volunteers in Kenya organized a two-day sector workshop at the JICA Kenya Office, with full support from JICA. 🏢✨

👥 The workshop brought together JICA volunteers working in different regions across the country to exchange experiences, challenges, and ideas from their field activities. Through interactive discussions, participants reflected on their work and shared practical approaches for supporting children and youth in their respective communities. 🎒🌱
📋💡 During the workshop, participants also collaborated to develop practical materials that can be used in their daily activities, including posters on positive behavior and life skills for children, as well as a poster on “𝑩𝒊𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒌’𝒔 7 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒊𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒔” for staff working in youth support.
On the second day, participants joined a session with a technical advisor, Dr. Fujioka, who provided professional feedback and practical guidance based on the participants’ activities. This session allowed volunteers to reflect on their work from a professional perspective and consider ways to improve and sustain their initiatives.

🇰🇪 This was followed by a special guest session with Ms. Sara Ichihashi the Co-founder of Koinonia Education Centre, a value-driven educational institution based in Nakuru County that provides holistic support for highly vulnerable Kenyan youth. She shared invaluable insights from her extensive experience in youth support within Kenya. Her presentation covered effective approaches to working with children and families, building strong collaborations with local staff, and navigating field challenges, offering a highly realistic and grounded perspective on youth development. 🌍❤️

🌟 This workshop provided an important opportunity for peer learning and capacity building among volunteers. The knowledge and ideas gained will be applied in their respective sites to further strengthen youth development efforts.

💪 We look forward to seeing how these initiatives contribute to positive change in communities across Kenya! 🌟

🌍 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬: 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐞. 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭. 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐞. 🇰🇪
Did you know that drylands cover over 40% of Africa and are home to half of the continent's population? In Kenya, Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) cover about 80% of the country. They support millions of lives but are highly vulnerable to severe droughts and other impacts of climate change. 🍂🐪

As Kenya proudly hosts the global observance of UN’s World Day to combat Desertification and Drought 2026, JICA is celebrating our strong partnership with the Government of Kenya (GOK) to build climate resilience.

Together, we are actively working on the ground to protect and restore our lands by:
🌱 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑭𝒐𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒔 & 𝑳𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒅𝒔: Through three powerful project phases, we are boosting ecosystem resilience in Kenya's ASALs:
• 𝑃ℎ𝑎𝑠𝑒 1 (𝑇𝑟𝑒𝑒 𝐵𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔): Tree breeding of drought tolerant species of drought tolerant trees species of 𝑀𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑎 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑘𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑖 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐴𝑐𝑎𝑐𝑖𝑎 𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑡𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑠,
• 𝑃ℎ𝑎𝑠𝑒 2 (𝐶𝐴𝐷𝐸𝑃-𝑆𝐹𝑀): Advanced agroforestry by promoting growing drought tolerant species of 𝘔𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘢 𝘷𝘰𝘭𝘬𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘪 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘈𝘤𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘢 𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘴, and regional trainings on climate resilient practices in forestry
• 𝑃ℎ𝑎𝑠𝑒 3 (𝑆𝐹𝑆-𝐶𝑂𝑅𝐸𝐶𝐶): Scaling up commercial forestry and community-led tree growing, achieving milestones like publishing Kenya's inaugural Forest Status Report (FSR) 2024 and planting 385 acres of improved Melia trees across 8 ASAL counties.
🌾 𝑺𝒆𝒄𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑭𝒐𝒐𝒅 & 𝑵𝒖𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏: JICA’s IFNuS Project builds adaptive capacity by supporting grass reseeding at 540 sites, introducing rabbit-keeping programs in Kitui, and running vegetable lunch programs in 78 Turkana schools using neglected and underutilized species.
💧 𝑺𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝑾𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕: Building on ECORAD’s successes, which expanded available grazing land around water sources by 284%, we use the Co-DUSYS system to monitor and verify borehole conditions to keep water flowing.
⚡ 𝑹𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒘𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝑬𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒈𝒚 𝑻𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑩𝒚 𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟬 : Mending the land goes hand-in-hand with clean energy. JICA’ has invested approximately $850M in Olkaria’s geothermal power which has been essential to accelerating Kenya’s energy transition and ensure a clean, secure, and cost-effective energy.🌋💡

Moving forward, JICA is committed to collaborating with our Development Partners, GoK, and stakeholders to formulate climate change interventions with sustainable impacts. Healthy rangelands mean a healthy future.
Let's protect our ecosystems together! 💪💚

They arrived from Japan with a singular mission: to deploy their skills with total commitment to the Kenyan people. 🇯🇵🤝🇰🇪

These two Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) have officially "𝒍𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒅 𝒖𝒑" Kenya's water quality and environmental conservation efforts. During their end-of-assignment presentations at the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) offices, leadership praised the volunteers' impactful work and reaffirmed the valued partnership between NEMA and JICA. 👏🏢

Assigned to NEMA Headquarters’ Water Analysis Laboratory (April 2025–April 2026), Ms. Sawatani brought high-level expertise in research, analysis, and the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). She sprinted past her goals, achieving:
✅ A significant increase in the number of testable items in water.
✅ Sharpened analytical skills among her laboratory colleagues, leading to more robust water-testing capabilities. 💧📈

Stationed at the NEMA Siaya County Office, Mr. Sumimoto became a local hero for his hands-on approach to sustainability:

♻️ 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒄 𝑪𝒓𝒖𝒔𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒓: He famously marched through Siaya town carrying a cross made of plastic waste to advocate for cleanliness—literally "carrying the weight" of the environment. 🚶‍♂️🚮
🥂 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑮𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒔 𝑮𝒖𝒓𝒖: He taught the community to upcycle waste glass into functional drinking glasses, significantly reducing the heaps of waste bottles within the town. ✨
🥭 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒆𝒓: He empowered the local community by showing them how to achieve a remarkable 80% germination success rate for mango seedlings. 🌱

Both JICA and NEMA anticipate even more "𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑛 𝑤𝑖𝑛𝑠" together in the future! 🌿🙌
