They arrived from Japan with a singular mission: to deploy their skills with total commitment to the Kenyan people. 🇯🇵🤝🇰🇪

These two Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) have officially "𝒍𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒅 𝒖𝒑" Kenya's water quality and environmental conservation efforts. During their end-of-assignment presentations at the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) offices, leadership praised the volunteers' impactful work and reaffirmed the valued partnership between NEMA and JICA. 👏🏢

🔬 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐚𝐛 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝: 𝐌𝐬. 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐢 𝐒𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐢
Assigned to NEMA Headquarters’ Water Analysis Laboratory (April 2025–April 2026), Ms. Sawatani brought high-level expertise in research, analysis, and the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). She sprinted past her goals, achieving:
✅ A significant increase in the number of testable items in water.
✅ Sharpened analytical skills among her laboratory colleagues, leading to more robust water-testing capabilities. 💧📈

🌳 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐢𝐚𝐲𝐚 𝐈𝐜𝐨𝐧 : 𝐌𝐫. 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐢 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐢𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐨
Stationed at the NEMA Siaya County Office, Mr. Sumimoto became a local hero for his hands-on approach to sustainability:

♻️ 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒄 𝑪𝒓𝒖𝒔𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒓: He famously marched through Siaya town carrying a cross made of plastic waste to advocate for cleanliness—literally "carrying the weight" of the environment. 🚶‍♂️🚮
🥂 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑮𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒔 𝑮𝒖𝒓𝒖: He taught the community to upcycle waste glass into functional drinking glasses, significantly reducing the heaps of waste bottles within the town. ✨
🥭 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒆𝒓: He empowered the local community by showing them how to achieve a remarkable 80% germination success rate for mango seedlings. 🌱

Both JICA and NEMA anticipate even more "𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑛 𝑤𝑖𝑛𝑠" together in the future! 🌿🙌

”𝑱𝑰𝑪𝑨 𝑺𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒂𝒓𝒔” are students from developing countries enrolled in universities in Japan to obtain Master’s or Doctoral degrees. Their goal is to contribute to the development of their home countries. They are working hard to achieve their goals!

Mr. NAMAYI Felex Osmond from Kenya is studying at the International University of Japan, where he is researching how social behavior influences water-saving practices. His goal is to explore low-cost behavior-change approaches that utilize social norms—a critical challenge for Kenya, where the sustainable use of water resources is a pressing issue.

Although he initially struggled with the snowy climate of Niigata and cultural differences, after a year and a half, he now enjoys cooking for himself, participating in study tours, and trying various Japanese foods as he embraces life in Japan.

After returning home, he hopes to work as a university lecturer, nurture younger generations, and contribute to the public policy and environmental sectors through his research.

On World Health Day, we at reinforce our recognition that good health starts at the community level.

JICA supports efforts towards achievement of Universal Health Coverage ( ) in Kenya through health systems strengthening including prevention and control of communicable, non – communicable and neglected tropical diseases. In many parts of Kenya, schistosomiasis—a neglected tropical disease (NTD)—continues to affect children and families, especially in areas where access to safe water and health services is limited.

Working together with the Kenya Medical Research Institute ( ), Ministry of Health and county governments of Kwale and Homabay, JICA is supporting efforts that combine:
✅ research and evidence-based solutions
✅ strengthening community health and laboratory capacity
✅ community-focused approaches to disease prevention & control

These efforts aim to reduce infections and contribute to the long-term elimination of schistosomiasis in Kenya.

On this World Health Day 2026, we stand with Kenyan communities in promoting health, dignity, and a better future for all.

📅The 2nd Joint Coordinating Committee (JCC) meeting for the 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒋𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑺𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒈𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒇 𝑺𝒂𝒇𝒆-𝑺𝒚𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒎 𝑨𝒑𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒂𝒄𝒉 𝒕𝒐 𝑹𝒐𝒂𝒅 𝑻𝒓𝒂𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄 𝑨𝒄𝒄𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝑲𝒆𝒏𝒚𝒂 was held on February 24, 2026, at the United States International University-Africa (USIU).

This multi-agency forum was led by;
⭐𝐃𝐫. 𝐑𝐚𝐲𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐎𝐦𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨, Principal Secretary, State Department for Internal Security and National Administration,
⭐𝐌𝐫. 𝐄𝐥𝐢𝐮𝐝 𝐋𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐭, Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Kenya Police Service, and
⭐𝐌𝐫. 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐚𝐰𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐨𝐭𝐨, Chief Representative, JICA Kenya

The Principal Secretary underscored the urgent need for a unified data ecosystem to enhance road safety. By integrating the National Police Service (NPS) and National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) databases with other state agencies, Kenya aims to achieve a 360-degree view of the sector, creating the data-driven transparency necessary for targeted interventions and informed policy changes.

The Project Director, DIG Mr. Eliud Langat, praised the technical working groups for their steady and consistent progress. He emphasized that the "𝑺𝒂𝒇𝒆-𝑺𝒚𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒎 𝑨𝒑𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒂𝒄𝒉" cannot work in isolation; it needs high-level support to make these safety rules a standard part of both the police and the transport sector.

JICA Kenya Chief Representative, Mr. Shinkawa tasked the stakeholders to look beyond traditional enforcement methods. 🇰🇪 He acknowledged the immense operational pressure placed on officers, noting that managing Nairobi’s dense traffic flow while enforcing safety regulations is a near-impossible manual task. To alleviate this burden, he called for 𝒊𝒏𝒏𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒔𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝒔𝒚𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒔, which would ensure that enforcement is both efficient and sustainable.

𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐬
🔗 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬: The committee stressed the need for agencies to link their digital systems. They discussed creating a central database to share information smoothly between the police, NTSA, health ministry, road agencies, and the judiciary.
💰 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 & 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠: To keep enforcement effective, the committee emphasized the need for a self-sustaining system. They highlighted that aligning road safety plans with national budget cycles is the most critical step for achieving long-term success.
🔍 𝐑𝐨𝐨𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐬 & 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭: The NTSA Director General stressed the need to move from reporting '𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡' happened to understanding '𝑤ℎ𝑦.' 𝑨𝒄𝒄𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒄𝒂𝒖𝒔𝒆-𝒄𝒐𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 at crash scenes is essential for effective, targeted road safety interventions.

We are excited to announce on the third and final Working Group (WG3) of the Master Trainer Programme (MTP) on Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) for West Africa, which begun on Monday 26th, in Nairobi, Kenya! 🇰🇪

This high-impact programme is a flagship partnership between the World Customs Organization (WCO) and JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency), hosted by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). 🤝✨

The MTP is more than just a workshop, it’s about sustainability. To date:

KRA commended WCO and JICA for this long-standing partnership, which continues to be a cornerstone of regional capacity building and trade facilitation. As we embrace digital transformation, JICA remains committed to "co-creating" innovative solutions for a safer, more prosperous Africa.
