The Kenya Sugar Board , in collaboration with Landscape Alliance CIFOR & ICRAF CIFOR-ICRAF, Kenya Sugar Research and Training Institute , and the University of Nairobi, is implementing a national soil fertility mapping and restoration initiative. This project aims to generate soil fertility data and digital maps across the Central, Southern, Lower, Upper, and Coastal catchments to inform effective fertilizer recommendations and enhance sugarcane productivity.

Following a stakeholder sensitization meeting with sugar mill agriculture managers, the implementation roadmap and soil fertility sampling are currently underway in the Central catchment.

The process began with field training, followed by joint Land Degradation Surveillance Framework (LDSF) sampling conducted by the KSB and CIFOR-ICRAF teams.

The Kenya Sugar Board successfully sensitized Coastal Catchment stakeholders on the Farmer Organization Operations Manual and Outgrower Revitalization Framework.

The engagement outlined a pathway to revive defunct farmer organizations through accountable leadership, transparent financial management, stronger farmer representation and coordinated services. These reforms will help rebuild farmer confidence, strengthen collective bargaining and improve access to inputs, extension, finance and markets. The Board received valuable stakeholder feedback, which will inform improvements to both documents to ensure they respond to farmers’ needs and local realities.

Alongside the sensitization, the Board partnered with the Kenya Forest Service, Msambweni, to plant 1,500 seedlings at Ramisi Comprehensive School. Farmers also received 500 seedlings for planting on their farms, supporting environmental conservation and the national tree-growing agenda.
