Something is cooking in Kitui County!

Recently, we met with 23 Heads of Institutions (HOIs), hosted by Curriculum Support Officer Usai Moki, to discuss and align on a proposed project to improve literacy outcomes in schools across the Voo zone, Mutomo Sub-county.

With only one school having a library in the region, the meeting aimed to bridge the literacy gap and define stakeholder roles to build a sustainable ecosystem.

Next year, we’ll visit the schools to assess their needs as we prepare for the next steps. Stay tuned!

These little ones at St Michael’s Primary and Junior School are already dreaming big! In their poem, 'Elimu Huanza Chekechea', they sing about the careers they aspire to and where that journey begins.

We want those dreams to have room to grow. That's why we provided toys and fun reading materials for their ECDE reading corner, giving the children more ways to learn, play and discover new stories.

But there are still schools where children don't have enough books to explore beyond the classroom. Help us bring more libraries to schools and put more stories within children's reach.

Wazazi, mko ready for the long holiday? 😂

Between “Mum, nataka toy mpya!”, screen time negotiations, and watoto wanaopatikana chini ya dining table ama wakipekua jikoni, keeping the little ones busy for the next few months is a job on its own!

Lakini what if you turned some of that holiday time into special moments with your child? Imagine snuggling up together, reading stories set in places they know, laughing at familiar experiences, and watching their little imaginations come alive!

These 21 titles are written by Kenyan primary school children, for children to enjoy, relate to, and get inspired by. Who knows? Your little reader might be the next young author!

And here's the best part: every purchase earns the young authors royalties, giving them even more reason to keep writing and sharing their stories.

Make storytime part of your holiday plans!

A little throwback to the launch of Library #328

Meet Madam Susan, the Head of Institution at St Anne’s Comprehensive School. She shares what having a library means for the learners and extends her heartfelt gratitude to the Kanji Vaja Malde family and Trufoods Limited for making this possible.

We’re excited to see the learners explore new books, discover stories they love and make the most of their new library when school reopens next year!

We hold close the people who believe that every child deserves the chance to read, learn and shape their future.

Sagar Malde, and the entire Kanji Vaja Malde family have been part of this journey, supporting our work to bring school libraries to more children. Our latest launches at St Anne’s Comprehensive School and St Michael’s Primary and Junior School are another milestone made possible through this continued support.

To Sagar and the family, thank you for standing with us and helping more children access the books and literacy skills they need to thrive.

There are more children waiting for this opportunity. Will you help us reach them?

Yesterday marked a beautiful beginning of not one, but two new chapters!

The doors to new school libraries opened at St Anne’s Comprehensive School and St Michael’s Primary and Junior School, welcoming learners into spaces filled with books, discovery and endless possibilities.

For the learners, these libraries hold so much more than books. They hold stories waiting to be discovered, new words waiting to be learnt, imaginations waiting to be sparked and confidence waiting to grow with every page.

A heartfelt thank you to the Malde family and for bringing more reading opportunities to these school communities and Trufoods staff for showing up and making this day a success.

Meet Tr Mwanah Faith from Heshima Road Primary and Junior School.

When she realized some of her grade 8 and 9 learners struggled to read and write, she introduced lower-grade storybooks during library lessons.

At first they felt embarrassed but with fun activities and the whole class reading together, they began recognizing words, understanding their meaning and using them correctly in sentences. As the year progressed, Faith noticed improvements in their learning, life skills and interactions with others.

Faith's story shows why teacher capacity building matters. When teachers can identify learners' reading levels and choose appropriate resources, they can help learners take meaningful steps forward.

Help us equip more teachers to support every learner's reading journey. Donate here: https://give-usa.keela.co/start-a-library-donate-page

Child marriage is not a solution to economic hardship. A child should never be a bargaining tool.

This International Day of the Girl Child, we stand for the UN theme: "End child marriage and invest in girls' rights!"
Across Kenya, too many girls are pushed into adulthood before they are ready. At Start A Library Trust, we break this cycle. By keeping Kenyan girls reading and in school, we protect their childhood and empower their future.
