🤝 Tracking the trail: Australia and Cambodia tackle financial crime 🔍

Australia and Cambodia share a long history of working together on shared challenged faced by our region. Financial crime is no exception.

For the first time, the Australian Taxation Office partnered with Cambodia’s General Department of Taxation to deliver their Foundational Tax Crime Investigation Workshop in Cambodia.

Recently, in the first of a series of three planned workshops, 40 officers and investigators met to learn practical tools to tackle tax evasion, money laundering, and the misuse of cryptocurrency.

By sharing international best practice – including more diverse and inclusive approaches to investigation – these workshops will offer skills and tools to ensure national resources are protected and reinvested into Cambodia’s growth.

Australia and Cambodia are working in partnership to create a safer, more secure and prosperous Mekong subregion.

Strengthening inclusive dialogue for better governance in Cambodia

Local administrations are at the front line of helping citizens, and training from the National School of Local Administration (NASLA) equips officials to better support the communities they serve.

Australia is supporting NASLA through a Train the Trainer initiative to build officials' skills in designing and leading community dialogues that meaningfully engage women, people with disabilities and other underrepresented groups.

This training will be shared with officials around the country, supporting more community members to have their voices heard in local decision-making processes.

International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers – 29 May

Today marks the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers. This year’s theme, ‘Invest in Peace’ calls for decisive action to ensure all peacekeepers have the resources they need to carry out their vital work.

Cambodia’s history reminds us why peacekeeping matters. In the 1990s, Australia played a vital role in supporting the peace process and leading the peacekeeping efforts that helped restore stability in Cambodia.

Today, we honour the dedication and sacrifice of UN peacekeepers around the world who continue to serve in challenging environments to protect communities and promote peace.

Australia’s support helps boost Cambodia’s coffee production

Cambodia’s coffee industry is growing fast, but local farmers currently supply only 10 per cent of domestic coffee demand. This creates a major opportunity for farmers in Cambodia’s highland areas, where the climate and terrain are perfect for coffee growing.

Australia is working with Cambodian coffee companies and smallholder farmers to improve coffee yields, quality and consistency. This helps many farmers from indigenous communities earn higher incomes and creates sustainable jobs.

Australia is supporting Cambodia to build a more resilient and inclusive economy – where quality economic opportunities are accessible to all and businesses thrive.
