Across Cambodia's Tonle Sap region, women farmers are proving that climate resilience begins with knowledge, innovation, and access to the right resources.

Through the Promoting Climate-Resilient Livelihoods in Rice-based Communities in the Tonle Sap Region (PCRL) project, farmers are adopting certified climate-resilient rice varieties and improved farming practices that help increase yields, reduce production costs, and strengthen food security in the face of a changing climate.

Beyond the fields, women are becoming leaders in their communities—sharing knowledge, supporting sustainable agriculture, and creating new opportunities for future generations.

Implemented by FAO in partnership with the General Directorate of Agriculture and the General Directorate of Local Communities, and funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the PCRL project is helping rice-growing communities build resilience while promoting sustainable livelihoods and environmental stewardship.

គម្រោង PCRL បានសហការរៀបចំវគ្គបណ្តុះបណ្តាលពង្រឹងសមត្ថភាពទេសចរណ៍ធម្មជាតិ ដល់សហគមន៍តំបន់ការពារធម្មជាតិចំនួន ៦ ក្នុងខេត្តគោលដៅរួមមានខេត្តពោធិ៍សាត់ បាត់ដំបង បន្ទាយមានជ័យ និងកំពង់ធំ។

🌿Building stronger communities through eco-tourism

The PCRL Project recently supported capacity-building training on eco-tourism for six Community Protected Areas (CPAs) across 4 target provinces including Pursat, Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, and Kampong Thom provinces.

The training equipped community members with practical skills in community tourism guiding, homestay management, first aid, and grant proposal development to help strengthen and expand local tourism initiatives.

By strengthening local capacity, the PCRL project is helping create additional livelihood opportunities for rural communities and promoting the conservation of natural resources. These efforts contribute to developing safer, higher-quality, and more attractive nature tourism destinations that benefit both people and the environment.

📍 PCRL is a five-year joint initiative by FAO Cambodia, General Directorate of General Directorate of General Directorate of Agronomy (GDA) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and General Directorate of Local Community (GDLC) of the Ministry of Environment, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

Not all farming landscapes are only home to people, but they are also home to wildlife that depends on healthy ecosystems to survive. 🌾

The houbaropsis bengalensis, one of the world’s rarest birds, can still be found in Cambodia’s protected grassland landscapes. Through the PCRL Project, we work alongside farming communities in Community Protected Area in Kampong Thom province to promote climate-resilient livelihoods while supporting the conservation of the bird's natural habitats.

Cam Agri Hub គឺជាបណ្ណសារឌីជីថលដែលបង្កើតឡើងក្រោមគម្រោង PCRL ដោយវិទ្យាស្ថានស្រាវជ្រាវស្រូវអន្តរជាតិ (IRRI) និងដាក់ឱ្យប្រើប្រាស់លើគេហទំព័ររបស់ក្រសួងកសិកម្ម រុក្ខាប្រមាញ់ និងនេសាទ (MAFF) ដែលជាទីកន្លែងប្រមូលផ្តុំឧបករណ៍ និងវេទិកាកសិកម្មឌីជីថលនានា សម្រាប់វិស័យកសិកម្មនៅកម្ពុជា។

Cam Agri Hub is a digital repository developed under the PCRL Project by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and hosted on the MAFF website, compiling a wide range of digital agricultural tools and platforms supporting Cambodia’s agriculture sector.

The platform serves as a centralized source of information on smart agricultural solutions, making it easier for government officers, development partners, researchers, students, and farmers to access digital tools related to agriculture and agrometeorology in one place.

By improving access to agricultural information and innovation, Cam Agri Hub supports climate-resilient and market-oriented farming practices, evidence-based decision making, knowledge sharing, and the broader digital transformation of Cambodia’s agricultural sector.

ក្រោមគម្រោង PCRL កិច្ចប្រជុំស្តីពីវឌ្ឍនភាពនៃការអនុវត្តផលិតកម្មស្រូវប្រកបដោយនិរន្តភាព (SRP) បានរៀបចំឡើងដោយអង្គការសមាគមអភិរក្សសត្វព្រៃកម្ពុជា WCS និងចូលរួមដោយ ស្ថាប័នរដ្ឋ វិស័យឯកជន ដៃគូអភិវឌ្ឍន៍ និងភាគីពាក់ព័ន្ធសំខាន់ៗនៅកម្ពុជា។

Strengthening collaboration for sustainable rice production in Cambodia 🌾

Under the PCRL project, the meeting on the progress of Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP) implementation was carried out by WCS, which gathered government institutions, private sector actors, development partners, and other key stakeholders to discuss the progress, challenges, and future direction of SRP implementation in Cambodia.

The meeting provided a platform for millers, exporters, and other private sector actors to raise key challenges in implementing SRP standards, while also identifying the types of support needed from government agencies and development partners to strengthen adoption and long-term sustainability.

The discussion also focused on strengthening the effectiveness of the SRP National Chapter as a national coordination platform that can better support collaboration, practical solutions, and stronger market opportunities for both farmers and buyers, contributing to a more resilient and sustainable rice sector in Cambodia.

វគ្គបណ្តុះបណ្តាលរ ស្តីពីការណែនាំអំពីការត្រួតពិនិត្យ និងវាយតម្លៃ (M&E) ត្រូវបានរៀបចំឡើង ដោយផ្តោតលើការប្រមូលទិន្នន័យ ការបញ្ចូលទិន្នន័យ និងការណែនាំអំពីការប្រើប្រាស់ Kobo Toolbox។ វគ្គបណ្តុះបណ្តាលនេះមានការចូលរួមពីក្រុមការងារថ្នាក់ជាតិ និងថ្នាក់ខេត្តរបស់គម្រោង PCRL មន្រ្តីបង្គោលពីមន្ទីរជំនាញគោលដៅ និងស្ថាប័នផ្តល់សេវាកម្ម។

Training on Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) Orientation, focusing on data collection, data entry, and the introduction to Kobo Toolbox, was recently carried out. The training was participated by the PCRL national and provincial teams, focal persons from target Provincial Departments, and service providers.

This training helped participants strengthen their understanding of digital data collection tools, review project progress against indicators, and ensure that the right farmers and communities receive the necessary support under the project.

Effective M&E systems are essential for keeping projects on track, improving transparency, and supporting better decision-making. For Cambodia’s rice farming and agricultural sector, accurate data is especially important to understand farmers’ needs, monitor climate impacts, and improve the delivery of climate-resilient agricultural support. 🌾

The workshop on rice seed production to foster inclusive agribusiness value chain network for price stabalization under the PCRL Project was successfully concluded in Kampong Thom Province.

The workshop brought together Rice Seed Producer Groups (RSPGs), especially within the Phka Rumduol (PRD) value chain, agricultural cooperatives, private and public sector actors, Commune Agricultural Officers (CAOs), and key stakeholders to discuss challenges, opportunities, and solutions related to rice seed value chains.

One of the workshop’s key outcomes was the initiation of RSPG network, which will enable farmers and producer groups to collectively sell rice seeds, strengthen their bargaining power, negotiate better prices, and improve access to markets.

The event also promoted collaboration, knowledge sharing, and better understanding of the One Stop Service pilot planning for future implementation in PCRL target communes. Stakeholders further agreed on action plans and future directions to strengthen market linkages and support sustainable, climate-resilient rice sector development.

Extreme heat is transforming food security — but solutions are within reach. 🌾🌍

A new joint Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations-World Meteorological Organization report warns that rising temperatures are threatening food production, rural livelihoods and agricultural workers worldwide.

For every 1°C of warming, maize and wheat yields could fall by 4–10%, while marine heatwaves have caused an estimated USD 6.6 billion in fisheries losses.

Early warning, better planning and stronger adaptation can reduce losses and protect livelihoods.

🇰🇭 In Cambodia, these solutions are being advanced through the PEARL Project, funded by the Green Climate Fund. Farmers receive forecasts and practical heat alerts through upgraded weather stations and mobile advisory systems.
