Angkor Wildlife & Aquarium (AWA) is proud to collaborate with the Marine Aquaculture Research and Development Center (MARDEC) on a meaningful conservation initiative focused on breeding and protecting seahorses, ornamental fish, and other endangered aquatic species.

As part of this partnership, the AWA team has successfully installed a dedicated seahorse breeding tank at the MARDEC facility, an important step toward strengthening

Here's something most people don't know.

May is one of the quietest months in Siem Reap โ€” which makes it one of the BEST times to visit AWA.

Why locals and residents are coming this month:
๐Ÿ˜Œ Fewer crowds โ€” you'll have exhibits practically to yourself
๐Ÿ“ธ Unhurried feeding times โ€” best seats, no jostling
๐Ÿฅค Cooler indoor spaces โ€” a perfect afternoon escape from the heat
๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ง Kids are still in school mornings โ€” quietest 8โ€“11 AM

Whether you live in Siem Reap, you're visiting family, or you've called Cambodia home for years โ€” this is your month to come (or come back).

Tell us below ๐Ÿ‘‡ What's your favourite spot in the park?

Gentle, innocent, and completely drama-free ๐Ÿ

Some of our residents arrived with stories.

AWA works with Cambodian authorities to take in wildlife rescued from the illegal pet trade, from traffickers at border crossings, and from situations where they can no longer survive in the wild.

Our rescued animals include big cats and sun bears โ€” animals that, in many cases, cannot be released back to the wild because they were taken too young or kept too long.

Here, they get:
โœ… Species-appropriate enclosures
โœ… A permanent home and daily care
โœ… A second chance to live with dignity

Rescue isn't always a happy ending โ€” but it is an ending better than the alternative.

Every visit to AWA directly supports this work.

Yes, that's a real nose. And yes, it's one of our favourite residents at AWA.

The Pig-Nosed Turtle is one of the strangest, most specialised freshwater turtles on the planet:

๐Ÿฝ A fleshy, pig-like snout it uses like a snorkel
๐ŸŠ Flippers like a sea turtle โ€” unique among freshwater species
๐Ÿฆด A soft, leathery shell (no hard plates)
๐ŸŒ Found naturally only in southern New Guinea and a small pocket of northern Australia

They're classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, mostly due to the illegal pet trade and habitat loss.

Come say hi next time you're here โ€” they're usually hovering near the surface, breathing through that one-of-a-kind snout.

Photos from Angkor Wildlife & Aquarium's post 15/05/2026

Today is Endangered Species Day , and right now, in our tanks, we're home to species that have nearly disappeared from the wild.

๐ŸŸ Mekong Giant Catfish โ€” Critically Endangered. Once common across the Mekong, now estimated at fewer than a few hundred mature adults left in the wild.
๐ŸŠ Siamese Crocodile โ€” Critically Endangered. Fewer than 1,000 remaining in the wild, most in Cambodian wetlands.
๐Ÿข Pig-Nosed Turtle โ€” Endangered. Targeted heavily by the illegal pet trade.

Every ticket you buy helps fund captive breeding, rehabilitation, and eventual release of species like these back into protected areas of Cambodia.

Endangered doesn't have to mean gone. But it takes all of us.

๐Ÿ“ See them up close at AWA โ€” open daily.
