The weather was fine today, and the smiling of happiness from the Outer Islands Infrastructure Technicians showed their enthusiasm as they attended and were ready for the lesson and workshop, which officially opened on 25 May 2026 at Awira Hall in the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Energy compound in Betio.

Led by the Officer in Charge, Senior Assistant Secretary Ms. Moanibou Areke Muller, together with the Acting Director General Mr. Santanu and several Heads of Departments from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Energy, all OIAIT officers attended the formal opening. However, the officer from Nikunau was unable to attend the first opening due to a flight delay.

During the Formal Opening, the welcome remarks were delivered by OIC SAS Muller, who highlighted the crucial importance of the workshop and the lessons learned for the OIAIT.

“Through the lessons covered, participants will gain a better understanding and grasp of the areas that need to work together on various tasks, and maintain good coordination between the outer islands and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Energy Headquarters on tasks that need to be carried out,” the OIC said.

“This event is very important to us because everyone in the department will have the opportunity to share the latest updates, discuss the work carried out and monthly monitoring activities, and review the outcomes of projects. There are many important matters to address, and we also want to discuss the success of the work based on your performance. Even though there may be challenges, please feel free to raise any questions regarding difficult matters,” the Director said.

The focus of this workshop for the OIAIT is to ensure that they return to their respective islands with improved capabilities and continue to follow the National Conditions of Service and the Ministry policies under which they work.

Therefore, the workshop lasted two weeks, and the schedule concluded on 05 June 2026.

HON. TEKEEUA TARATI, MINISTER FOR INFRASTRUCTURE AND SUSTAINABLE ENERGY ATTENDS THE 6TH PACIFIC REGIONAL ENERGY AND TRANSPORT MINISTERS MEETING (PRETMM 6) IN PNG.
Hon. Tekeeua Tarati, Minister for Infrastructure and Sustainable Energy, together with his delegation, departed Kiribati on 1st of May 2026 to attend the Sixth Pacific Regional Energy and Transport Ministers Meeting (PRETMM6) held in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
The meeting was hosted under the support of the Government of Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Community (SPC), bringing together Energy and Transport Ministers from across the Pacific. The forum is convened every three years, providing a key platform for Pacific leaders to discuss regional energy and transport challenges, opportunities, and priorities for sustainable development.
The Minister and delegations returned to Kiribati on 12 May 2026, following the conclusion of the meeting.
PACIFIC MINISTERS REAFFIRM ENERGY TRANSITION COMMITMENT
At PRETMM6, Pacific Energy Ministers reaffirmed their shared commitment to accelerate the transition to renewable energy and strengthen regional energy security under the theme “Scaling Connectivity for a Prosperous Blue Pacific.”
Ministers acknowledged that while Pacific countries have strong renewable energy ambitions, the region must now shift focus from planning to practical implementation and delivery.
KEY OUTCOMES FROM THE MEETING
Ministers endorsed a new strategic direction through FESRIP 2.0 (2026–2030), focusing on:
1. Strengthening electricity grids to support renewable energy
2. Improving project preparation and investment readiness
3. Building technical and institutional capacity
They also emphasised:
• Strengthening disaster resilience in energy systems
• Improving data systems for better planning and transparency
• Enhancing regional coordination among Pacific agencies and partners
• Supporting workforce development, including increased participation of women in the energy sector

ENERGY SECURITY AND REGIONAL CHALLENGES
Ministers also raised concern over fuel supply vulnerabilities affecting Pacific economies, highlighting the urgent need to reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels and strengthen long-term energy security.
REGIONAL COMMITMENT
The Ministers concluded by reaffirming their collective vision for a connected, resilient, and sustainable Blue Pacific, with continued commitment to achieving a high share of renewable energy across the region.
KIRIBATI’S COMMITMENT
The Minister for Infrastructure and Sustainable Energy and his delegations fully support and remain committed to implementing the outcomes and decisions agreed at PRETMM6, working in partnership with regional and international stakeholders to advance Kiribati’s energy security and sustainable development goals.
