Saudi Arabia is using drones and other advanced technologies to help protect pilgrims from extreme heat during the hajj, as temperatures in Mecca reached 45C this week. Authorities said drones now deliver medical supplies quickly to 127 clinics across Mecca, Mina and Arafat, avoiding heavily congested roads crowded with more than 1.5 million pilgrims.

Officials from the National Unified Procurement Company (NUPCO) said preparations for the hajj medical season began nine months ago, with teams working around the clock to ensure rapid response times for heat-related illnesses. Before drones were introduced, supply deliveries to clinics could take more than an hour.

Saudi authorities have also deployed artificial intelligence to monitor crowds through thousands of cameras, while traditional cooling measures such as giant fans, water distribution trucks and mist systems remain in use.

Health officials said heat exhaustion remains one of the main concerns during the pilgrimage, stressing that emergency teams are maintaining a high level of readiness.

Hundreds of thousands of Muslims gathered on Mount Arafat on Tuesday for the peak of the annual hajj pilgrimage, praying under soaring desert temperatures nearing 40C.

More than 1.5 million pilgrims are taking part in this year’s hajj despite regional tensions.

Saudi authorities distributed water, umbrellas and food to worshippers and urged pilgrims to stay hydrated amid extreme heat that recently reached 44C in Mecca.

After prayers at Mount Arafat, pilgrims will head to Muzdalifah before performing the symbolic “stoning of the devil” ritual in Mina.

The hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam, must be performed at least once by all Muslims with the means to do so.

The Amiri Diwan also conveyed Eid greetings to His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah and His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.
