The Orient-Institut Beirut is an independent German research institute which conducts and supports historical and contemporary research in the Humanities and Social Sciences on the Middle East. Research activity at the institute includes a broad spectrum of approaches and methods current in humanities and social sciences. Social, religious, and intellectual history as well as the study of literature, language and politics, for instance, may appear within the range of projects conducted at the institute. Particular emphasis is put on the systematic study of primary sources, regional agents and affairs. The Orient-Institut is committed to supporting individual research. Its library services, colloquia and lecture series are meant to offer a complement and inspiring framework for studies in various fields. To encourage academic cohesion and continuity, teams of scholars collaborate to develop institute-wide projects and long-term thematic perspectives. International Conference:
New Perspectives on South-Asian and Middle Eastern Connections in the 20th Century
Antoinette Ferrand (Ifao) & Simon Conrad (OIB)
📆 9 - 10 May 2026
📍 Ifao, Mounira

This conference seeks to move beyond existing paradigms and explore new approaches to the study of the Arab world and South Asia while uncovering understudied histories of exchange. The conference’s focus is on the period between the years following the First World War and the height of the Cold War. The exchange and these connections we seek to investigate are manifold: they encompass the production of knowledge in one region of the other region; histories and imaginaries of anti-colonial solidarity; military and proto-diplomatic relations extending beyond colonial rule; the exchange of technological expertise; cultural and academic collaboration; and more. Aside from covering new ground in the fields of South Asia, Middle East, and global history, the conference seeks to foster a community of scholars interested in links, echoes, contrasts, and comparisons between South Asia and the Middle East.
