CNRS Lebanon Scientific Arm of the Lebanese Government 🇱🇧 | Promote Research | Serve the Scientific Community

The National Council for Scientific Research (CNRS-L 🇱🇧) is the scientific arm of the Lebanese government. It operates at national and international levels to promote research and serve the scientific community in Lebanon. Overview:
Under the direct authority of the Presidency of the Council of ministers, the CNRS-L has been established as the central public institution, with administrative and financial autonomy, in charge of scientific research. It has been mandated with two major missions:

🎯Advisory mission: The CNRS-L is mandated to draw the general outline of the National Science Policy, formulate proposals and suggestions to the government and carry out surveys and inventories of ongoing research activities in private and public institutions in the country.
🎯Executive mission: Consists in the implementation of the National Science Policy. To achieve this objective, the CNRS-L is mandated to initiate, encourage, and coordinate research. Organizational Structure & Programs:

🏢I-CNRS-L Research Centers: In order to address issues that are not fully covered by existing academic institutions in Lebanon, the CNRS-L over the years established four specialized research centers:

-National Center for Marine Sciences- NCMS (since 1975);
-National Center for Geophysics-NCG (since 1975);
-National Center for Remote Sensing- NCRS (since 1995);
-Lebanese Atomic Energy Commission- LAEC (since 1996). Those centers are recognized experts in their fields, ensuring services to various ministries and national stakeholders while also conducting research according to their missions.

📑II-CNRS-L Main Programs: In parallel, the CNRS-L supports national, regional, and international research in Lebanon through the following programs & activities: Grant Research Program, Regional and bilateral Programs, PhD Scholarship Program, Undergraduate Scholarship Program, CNRS Awards for Research Excellence & Research Career Excellence.

🌍III- International Cooperation: CNRS-L has worked to enhance its cooperative links by joining existing networks, implementing regional projects financed by the European Commission, The World Bank, the United National Environment Program, the United National Development Program, the Food and Agricultural Organization as well as other regional and international organizations. The CNRS-L is the Coordinating National Contact Point (NCP) for the EU Framework Programs since 2011 and has participated accordingly in many projects such as MEDSPRING, ERANETMED, MERID & 4PRIMA, LOCAL-SATS, M3HABS, WATERDrop, and GREATMED. CNRS-L is also the Lebanese partner in PRIMA program.

🔸 في 6 تشرين الأول 2026، نظّمت عمادة الدراسات العليا والبحث العلمي في جامعة بيروت العربية، بالشراكة مع المجلس الوطني للبحوث العلمية – لبنان ومؤسسة الحريري للتنمية البشرية المستدامة، مؤتمراً علمياً بعنوان: «النهوض بالبحث العلمي من أجل مستقبل مستدام»(ARSFC 2026) ، برعاية معالي وزير الدولة لشؤون التنمية الإدارية الدكتور فادي مكي. وهدف المؤتمر إلى مناقشة سبل تحويل نتائج البحث العلمي إلى حلول عملية تسهم في بناء مستقبل أكثر استدامة.

🔵 وفي كلمته، شدّد أمين عام المجلس الوطني للبحوث العلمية – لبنان، الدكتور شادي عبد الله، على أهمية توظيف البحث العلمي والتكنولوجيا في خدمة المجتمع والدولة، وعلى عمل المجلس في مجالات البيئة والموارد الطبيعية والمياه والزراعة والطاقة والمخاطر الطبيعية والإنذار المبكر، وتحويل نتائج الأبحاث إلى سياسات وحلول عملية، مشيرا الى ان الأزمات المتتالية التي شهدها لبنان، ولا سيما الحرب والاعتداءات الإسرائيلية، أكدت أهمية دور العلم في رصد الأضرار وتوثيقها.

👥 وجمع المؤتمر باحثين وأكاديميين وطلاباً ومختصين، وتناولت النقاشات أربعة محاور رئيسية، هي: الصحة المستدامة، والاستدامة المالية والاجتماعية، والابتكار من أجل مستقبل مستدام ورقمي، والمجتمعات القادرة على الصمود أمام التغير المناخي ومستقبل المدن.

📚 وفي هذا الإطار، شارك أربعة ممثلين عن المجلس الوطني للبحوث العلمية في عدد من الجلسات، وهم:

🔹 الدكتورة كارلا خاطر، مديرة منصة النظم الايكولوجية في المجلس، متحدثة رئيسية في جلسة من الأهداف العالمية إلى الأثر المحلي: «البحث العلمي محركاً لمستقبل مستدام».
🔹 الدكتور حسن السبع، باحث في المركز الوطني للمخاطر الطبيعية والإنذار المبكر التابع للمجلس، ضمن الجلسة الثالثة «الابتكار من أجل مستقبل مستدام ورقمي»، التي ركّزت على الذكاء الاصطناعي والتحول الرقمي والأنظمة الذكية والتقنيات المستقبلية.
🔹 الانسة إيلينا معلوف من المركز الوطني للمخاطر الطبيعية والإنذار المبكر التابع للمجلس، ضمن الجلسة الرابعة «مجتمعات قادرة على الصمود أمام التغير المناخي ومستقبل المدن»، التي ركّزت على التكيف مع التغير المناخي والمرونة الحضرية والمدن المستدامة.
🔹 الدكتور غالب فاعور، مدير المركز الوطني للاستشعار عن بُعد التابع للمجلس، شارك في جلسة نقاشية بعنوان «صياغة مستقبل مستدام: التحديات والفرص».

🤝 واختُتم المؤتمر بالتأكيد على أهمية تعزيز التعاون بين البحث العلمي وصنّاع السياسات والقطاعين العام والخاص، وتحويل المعرفة والنتائج البحثية إلى حلول عملية وأثر ملموس يخدم المجتمع.

14 Candidats, 14 Thèses, 180 Secondes pour convaincre!

🔸 Le 1er octobre 2026, le Conseil National de la Recherche Scientifique – Liban (CNRS-L) et l’Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) ont organizé l’édition 2026 du concours « Ma Thèse en 180 secondes », dans les locaux du CNRS-L à Beyrouth.

🏆 À l’issue de la compétition, trois lauréats ont remporté les trois premières places:

🥇1er prix — Ghina Hage Chehade: Doctorante à l’Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth
🥈2e prix — Nathalie Tawil: Doctorante à l’Université Saint-Esprit de Kaslik
🥉3e prix — Amine Fikani: Doctorant à l’Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth.

👏 Félicitations aux trois lauréats, ainsi qu’à l’ensemble des doctorants qui ont relevé le défi de présenter leurs travaux de recherche en 180 secondes chrono!
