Why Do Concrete Slabs Crack?
Cracks in concrete don’t always mean poor quality—but understanding why they happen can save a lot of time and money.
Here are the top 4 reasons concrete slabs crack:
1. Shrinkage – As concrete dries, it shrinks. If it dries too fast or isn't cured properly, it cracks.
2. Overloading – Too much weight beyond the design capacity can cause cracks or even failure.
3. Lack of Joints – Expansion and contraction are natural. Without proper joints, the concrete will create its own… by cracking!
4. Poor Subgrade Preparation – Uneven or weak soil beneath the slab leads to uneven settlement and cracking.

Always use proper curing methods and expansion joints, and don’t underestimate the importance of site prep!

I graduated as a civil engineer from Rafik Hariri University in 2015 and joined the Orders of Engineers that same year. Since then, I’ve been working in Lebanon, but as we all know, the country is going through incredibly challenging times. Unfortunately, I’ve been without work for several months, and I’ve made the difficult decision to leave Lebanon in search of opportunities abroad.
To do this, I need to authenticate my certificates from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education. Here’s where things get frustrating: in order to get these authentications, I need a newly stamped copy of my university degrees in 2024! This is nearly impossible right now since the university is in the south and currently closed. I already have official copies stamped in 2022, but the Ministry of Education refuses to accept them and demands a new one!!!
To make matters worse, they’re also asking for my Life Science certificate again! Incredible... all of this while we’re in a state of war.
Amazing country! amazing system! and amazing exceptions… What a country! what a government!!!
