Sri Lanka is experiencing the worst catastrophe after many decades
Recent storms and heavy rains — have affected Sri Lanka, how many lives and people have been lost or displaced, which regions are hit, and why many believe we have a moral obligation to help victims.
The disaster was triggered by Cyclone Ditwah — a tropical cyclone in November 2025 — which brought torrential rains, flooding and landslides across the country.
Some areas reportedly received more than 300 mm of rainfall within 24 hours.
Flooding and landslides disturbed rivers, reservoirs, roads, rail-links; many villages, towns, homes were submerged or damaged.
As of the most recent official reports: News First Reports
At least 153 people have been confirmed dead in this disaster.
In addition, 191 people are reported missing.
Hundreds of thousands of people are affected: one report said 774,724 people (from 217,263 families) have been impacted nationwide.
Tens of thousands have been displaced: for example, about 78,000 people moved into temporary shelters as many homes were destroyed.
Regions and eras (areas) affected:
The central mountainous, tea-growing highlands: districts such as Badulla District and Nuwara Eliya District suffered many landslides and heavy casualties.
Low-lying and flood-prone zones near major rivers — including areas around the capital, Colombo, and suburbs such as Wellampitiya — have been flooded.
Many other districts around the country have reported people affected, homes destroyed, and displacement.
When disasters strike at this scale — many lives lost, many missing, huge displacement, destruction of homes — the human suffering is large and widespread. People lose shelter, livelihoods, basic security.
In such a crisis, many victims are left in vulnerable positions: they may lack access to food, clean water, medical care, shelter. It becomes a collective responsibility of society — neighbours, fellow citizens, global community — to support them.
