Mangroves play an integral role in protecting the coastal environment and areas as well as the biodiversity surrounding them. These plants store up to 500% more organic carbon than your average terrestrial tropical plant. This is a result of the mangrovesโ ability to apprehend and store organic carbon, in their soils. With an average life span of 25 years, a hectare of a mature mangrove forest absorbs up to 840 metric tonnes of carbon. Which means that one mangrove tree removes 308kg (0.3 tonnes) of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere over its growth span , which is 12.3kg per year. Most territorial plants have their carbon stored above the soil level whilst in mangroves, it is stored below the soil level.
Unlike green carbon terrestrial plants and forests, which stores organic carbon in the form of biomass which is not released to the atmosphere until after the trees die, mangroves store most carbon in their soil sediments. It would last longer if itโs not destroyed. Thus, in order to sequestrate carbon naturally, without the involvement of human labor and man made processes, mangroves must be protected and maintained.
