Leopards: masters of the slow life 🐆🌳
Think a leopard is lazy? Kind of and deliberately so. Leopards spend most of the day resting (often draped over a tree branch or tucked under shade), conserving energy for short, intense bursts of hunting. Studies and field observations report leopards resting many hours each day. Commonly up to around 15–18 hours in some cases and being most active at night or during dawn and dusk.
Why trees? Trees give leopards three big advantages: a safe place to sleep away from other predators, a vantage point for spotting prey, and a secure location to stash kills out of reach of scavengers. Their powerful climbing ability means they can haul heavy prey up branches and then lounge nearby until hunger (or nightfall) calls them down.
Leopards are ambush specialists. They rely on stealth and camouflage rather than long chases. That’s one reason they save energy by resting long periods and hunting during low light, when their night vision gives them an edge. Their activity patterns can shift with season, location, and moonlight, so “lazy” is really smart energy management.
Next time you see a photo of a leopard snoozing on a branch, remember: it’s not lazy — it’s efficient. Quiet, patient, perfectly adapted. 💤🌿

Legends of Kalawewa – Neela & Bharana 🐘✨
Back in 2016, I was fortunate to capture this rare moment, two magnificent tuskers, Neela and Bharana, standing side by side in the heart of Kalawewa.
Barana, the gentle giant who once roamed these plains with pride, left us in 2022 after being tragically electrocuted by an illegal power line, yet another heartbreaking reminder of the ongoing human-elephant conflict in Sri Lanka. His loss was not just of a tusker, but of a symbol of the wild’s grace and strength.
Neela, the other legend in this frame, was once one of the most iconic sights of Kalawewa. A true embodiment of beauty and majesty. Sadly, there has been no news of him in recent years, and his fate remains uncertain.
This photograph now holds more than a memory. It’s a silent tribute to two great sons of the wild, who once made Kalawewa one of the most magical places in Sri Lanka. 🌿
May their legacy remind us why we must protect and coexist with these incredible beings.

Tusker Denzil
Tusker Denzil, the remarkable elephant of Sri Lanka, is a living symbol of both nature’s grace and a poignant tribute to a true national hero. Born in 2012 to Mattali, a female elephant released from the Udawalawe Elephant Sanctuary, Denzil's early life unfolded amidst the lush landscapes of Udawalawe National Park. His birthplace, the 5th Pillar Tank Field, bears the echoes of his youth, where he roamed freely with his mother’s herd, learning the ways of the wild.
As Denzil matured, he made a significant move, leaving his mother’s protective embrace to join Aravinda, another iconic elephant of the park. Together, they formed an inseparable bond, a rare and beautiful friendship that symbolizes the deep connections elephants share in the wild.
What makes Denzil even more special is the story behind his name. "Denzil" is not just a name, it is a tribute. It honors Major General Denzil Kobbekaduwa, a brave and selfless soldier who laid down his life for Sri Lanka, tragically lost to a terrorist bomb during a security operation. Denzil’s name serves as a powerful reminder of sacrifice, courage, and dedication to the country, a living memorial of a hero's legacy intertwined with the wildlife of Sri Lanka.
Denzil’s story is more than just that of an elephant. He embodies the strength and resilience of a nation and the deep, unspoken bond between Sri Lanka’s wildlife and its history. His friendship with Aravinda only adds to the charm of this majestic creature, whose life continues to inspire awe and respect. For anyone lucky enough to encounter Denzil on a safari in Udawalawe, it is an experience that transcends wildlife observation, it’s a connection to something much deeper, a story of heroism and nature coexisting in harmony.
