OCDS STAFF HONOUR GENERAL SHAVENDRA SILVA WITH A MEMORABLE FAREWELL

In a poignant gesture of gratitude and respect, the staff of the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff (OCDS) bid a heartfelt farewell to General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil on the eve of his retirement.

The occasion began with a farewell tea party, where General Shavendra Silva was warmly greeted by the staff and the CDS took the opportunity convey his deep gratitude to his staff for their unwavering dedication and support, acknowledging their contributions to the success of the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff during his tenure.

After which, the outgoing CDS unveiled his portrait, an enduring tribute to his legacy and exemplary leadership, which will continue to inspire many generations to come.

To commemorate the moment, the CDS posed for a group photograph with the staff and in a gesture filled with reflection and emotion, General Shavendra Silva penned his sentiments in the visitors' book, leaving behind words that encapsulate his profound dedication and enduring commitment to the armed forces and the nation he served with distinction.

Following cherished military traditions, the staff lined up along the street to offer their salutations, chanting the slogan "Jaya Sri," as they wished the outgoing CDS the best of luck in his retirement. It was a nostalgic moment, reflecting the deep respect and admiration for his illustrious service.

The farewell was a fitting tribute to a leader whose vision, dedication, and integrity have left an indelible mark on the Sri Lankan military. General Shavendra Silva’s departure from active service is not just the conclusion of a distinguished career but the beginning of a lasting legacy that will continue to resonate within the armed forces and the nation.

Adding a deeply symbolic touch to the twilight of the day, General Shavendra Silva chose not to retire without paying his final respects at the Armed Forces Memorial in Sri Jayawardenepura. In a poignant gesture, he went there and laid a floral tribute at the monument, honouring all fallen war heroes, including his mentor, the late Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne marking the conclusion of his illustrious 41 years of distinguished military service.

Following the solemn tribute, when asked by the media for his final thoughts on the eve of retirement, the General said, “As I hang my uniform and head home today, all the accolades, gallantries, medals, awards, and fame I have gained, I dedicate with respect to the brave men and women who laid down their lives in battle and leave these honours atop this memorial as I walk away.”

THE LONGEST - SERVING MILITARY OFFICER BIDS FAREWELL TO ACTIVE SERVICE AS CHIEF OF DEFENCE STAFF

Marking the conclusion of a remarkable and decorated military career, the incumbent Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil, will retire from active service as the Chief of Defence Staff with effect from 1st January 2025.

General Shavendra Silva was appointed as the 8th Chief of Defence Staff of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka effective from 01 June 2022.

General Shavendra Silva has rendered over 40 years of unblemished, distinguished, and commendable service in the Sri Lanka Army. Before assuming the role of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), he served as the Acting Chief of Defence Staff and the 23rd Commander of the Sri Lanka Army. Notably, he holds the distinction of being promoted to the first four-star General while on active service to lead the Sri Lanka Army, earning widespread acclaim for his exceptional leadership and strategic vision.

In honour of his retirement, a majestic Tri-Service Guard of Honour was accorded ceremonially at the premises of Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) symbolizing the deep respect and recognition for his service to the Tri-Services of the Sri Lanka Armed Forces.

The outgoing military leader, renowned as the longest-serving and most decorated officer in the Sri Lankan Armed Forces history, was escorted to a specially erected saluting dais by Tri-Service bagpipers, adding a touch of grandeur to the occasion. The majestic ceremony highlighted the esteem in which he is held by his colleagues and subordinates.

GENERAL SHAVENDRA SILVA BIDS ADIEU TO THE SRI LANKA ARMY

The Sri Lanka Army bid a heartfelt farewell to General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), as he made his official visit to Army Headquarters on 31 December 2024, marking the conclusion of his illustrious military career. This momentous occasion celebrated the culmination of a remarkable journey of one of the finest military leaders ever produced by the Sri Lanka Army.

Upon his arrival at Army Headquarters, General Shavendra Silva was warmly received by Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP psc IG, the newly appointed Commander of the Army, and was accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour.

First, the CDS extended his heartfelt congratulations to Lieutenant General Rodrigo on his prestigious promotion to the esteemed rank of three-star General, after which the two leaders engaged in a cordial discussion.

Then the General Shavendra Silva took the opportunity to address the troops gathered at the Army Headquarters to bid farewell to him and he expressed his deep gratitude to all the senior officers who had guided his military career from the outset, with a special acknowledgment of the late Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne, whose mentorship had left an indelible mark on his journey at the early stages of his military career.

General Shavendra Silva's tenure was marked by groundbreaking achievements and exceptional service. As the 23rd Commander of the Sri Lanka Army and the 14th CDS, he holds the distinction of being the first officer from the Gajaba Regiment to ascend to these prestigious positions. CHIEF OF DEFENCE STAFF PAYS A FAREWELL VISIT TO SRI LANKA AIR FORCE

General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), paid an official farewell visit to Air Force Headquarters on 30 December, ahead of his retirement from active military service on 1 January 2025. This visit marked a significant milestone in his illustrious military career, underscoring the strong cooperation cultivated among the armed forces during his tenure.

Upon his arrival, the CDS was graciously welcomed by the Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa RSP and two Bars, VSV, USP, MSc (MOA) USA, MSc (Def Stu) in Mgt, MA in IS & S (UK), BSc (Def Stu), MIM (SL), AMIE (SL), rcds, psc followed by a ceremonial Guard of Honour, signifying the profound admiration and gratitude for his service.

In a cordial meeting with the Air Force Commander, the CDS commended the outstanding service rendered by the Sri Lanka Air Force under the current Commander’s leadership. He highlighted the Air Force’s pivotal role in safeguarding Sri Lanka’s airspace and contributing to the nation’s overall security and stability.

During the meeting, General Shavendra Silva expressed his profound gratitude to all Air Force Commanders who provided crucial air support to the 58 Division under his command during humanitarian operations. He also extended heartfelt appreciation to the courageous pilots, crew members, and all personnel of the Sri Lanka Air Force who made significant sacrifices in service to the nation.

General Shavendra Silva also expressed his appreciation to the current Commander of the Air Force for his unwavering support and dedication throughout his tenure as the CDS. As the Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York, at the time, General Shavendra Silva pioneered in persuading then UN Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon to approve the deployment of six helicopters for peacekeeping operations in the Central African Republic for the first time in the history. His effort was instrumental in securing this significant achievement for the Sri Lanka Air Force and the Armed Forces as a whole. To ensure its successful implementation, General Shavendra Silva personally visited the Central African Republic to oversee the proceedings before the establishment of the helicopter squadrons.

The farewell visit underscored the enduring bond between General Shavendra Silva and the Armed Forces of Sri Lanka, reflecting mutual respect and admiration built over decades of service.

SRI LANKA NAVY HONOURS OUTGOING CHIEF OF DEFENCE STAFF

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil paid a courtesy farewell visit to the Navy Headquarters today (30 December), as part of his retirement from the active service scheduled from 01 January 2025. The visit marked an important milestone in his illustrious career, reflecting the close collaboration between the armed forces under his leadership.

Upon his arrival, the CDS was graciously welcomed by the Commander of the Navy, Admiral Priyantha Perera RSP ** USP ndu psc and accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour, symbolizing the deep respect and recognition for his service.

First of all, the CDS conveyed his heartfelt congratulations to Admiral Priyantha Perera on his prestigious promotion to the esteemed rank of four-star Admiral earlier this morning. He also extended his best wishes and encouragement to the incoming Commander of the Navy, Rear Admiral Kanchan Banagoda, expressing hope for continued excellence and progress within the Navy under his leadership.

During a cordial discussion with the Navy Commander, CDS commended the exemplary service rendered by the Sri Lanka Navy under the present Commander’s astute leadership. He specifically acknowledged the Navy’s remarkable recent achievements, particularly in intercepting and preventing drug trafficking into Sri Lanka, which has contributed significantly to the nation's security and stability.

Expressing his gratitude, the CDS thanked the Navy Commander for the unwavering support extended to him during his tenure. GAJABA REGIMENT HONOURS A DISTINGUISHED LEGACY: BIDS FAREWELL TO ONE OF ITS GREATEST SONS

After the late Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne established the Gajaba Regiment, the most celebrated military officer and the first Gajaba officer to become the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, as well as the first Gajaba officer to ascend to the prestigious position of Chief of Defence Staff, General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil, took time to receive the honours offered by his mother regiment in appreciation of his exceptional military service at the ‘Home of Gajaba’ in Saliyapura this morning (29 December 2024), as he reaches his retirement from the active military service at end of this month (31 December 2024).

This momentous occasion marks the culmination of an illustrious career spanning across forty-one years, the longest period of continuous active service ever by an officer in the Sri Lankan Armed Forces. A distinguished and highly respected senior military officer, General Shavendra Silva's service stands as a testament to unwavering dedication, exceptional leadership, and profound patriotism.

Before the parade formalities began, General Shavendra Silva, with utmost respect, paid a solemn visit to the monument dedicated to the fallen Gajaba war heroes, where he honoured their memory with a floral tribute.

He did not forget to pay tribute to the memorial statue of the founder of the Gajaba Regiment, the late Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne, which was erected at the Gajaba Regimental Headquarters complex when General Shavendra Silva was serving as the 23rd Commander of the Army and the Colonel of the Regiment.

He then inspected the guard turnout to commence the military formalities, having been received by the Colonel of the Gajaba Regiment and the Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Major General M G W W W M C Wickramasinghe RWP RSP ndu psc, who escorted General Shavendra Silva to the military parade. The parade, consisting of troops from seventeen Gajaba Regiments, was commanded by Major General U K D D P Udugama RWP RSP USP ndc psc, the appointed Director General of General Staff of the Sri Lanka Army.

After inspecting the parade, General Shavendra Silva was escorted by the Colonel of the Regiment, Major General Chandana Wickramasinghe, during the parade. Following the parade, General Shavendra Silva addressed the parade troops and all those present to witness the event.
General Shavendra Silva, who holds the distinction of being the first Gajaba officer to command the Sri Lanka Army, the first to ascend to the prestigious position of Chief of Defence Staff, the only military officer to serve a diplomatic tenure while on active service to date, and the first four-star general produced by the Gajaba Regiment, expressed with utmost gratitude that everything he achieved in his military career is owed to the competence gained through his upbringing at the Gajaba Regiment and the invaluable experiences he gained from the Sri Lanka Army.

First of all, he paid a heartfelt tribute to the founding father of the Gajaba Regiment, the late Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne, under whose guidance he was nurtured in the 1st Gajaba Regiment. He gratefully mentioned that the late Major General Wimalaratne personally offered books from his own shelf to help him study and mould himself into a professional military officer.

During the Address, General Shavendra Silva went on to highlight some of the key infrastructure developments he established during his tenure as the Colonel of the Regiment, including the Gajaba Regiment Headquarters. He proudly noted that it stands as one of the most beautiful, attractive, and well-constructed army camps in the entire Sri Lanka Army—affectionately known as 'the Home of Gajaba'—and is equipped with all the essential infrastructure facilities for both officers and soldiers. This headquarters complex is undoubtedly the best regimental headquarters complex among the all regiments in the Army.

Furthermore, he pioneered the establishment of a carpeted parade square for the regiment, a five-turfed cricket ground, and was the mastermind behind the ‘King Keterian’ Holiday Home. He also oversaw the carpeting of all roads within the camp, the creation of a well-equipped Warrant Officers and Sergeants’ Mess, and the construction of a two-storied accommodation block for young officers.

General Shavendra Silva urged the Gajaba Regiment to maintain unity, professionalism, and uphold the highest quality and military standards among all officers and soldiers, ensuring that the Gajaba flag continues to fly high within the Armed Forces of Sri Lanka. As the first officer to be posted to the Gajaba Regiment, he proudly stated that his service to the regiment surpasses what words can express.

Finally, General Shavendra Silva emphasised that the soldiers who laid down their lives possessed an unshakable determination that the country deserved everlasting peace. Their courage was never for self-glory, but for a vision of a secure and safe future for Sri Lanka, one built on unity, peace, and strength.

As part of the occasion, he planted a sapling to symbolize the conclusion of his remarkable career rooted in the Gajaba Regiment and he had a cordial discussion with the Colonel of the Regiment Major General M G W W W M C B Wickramasinghe RWP RSP ndu psc.

The vibrant ceremony was attended by CDS's spouse, Mrs. Sujeewa Nelson, and many senior officers, officers, their spouses and a large number of other ranks of the Gajaba Regiment, underscoring the profound respect and admiration for his contributions. As General Shavendra Silva steps into a new chapter of his life, his leadership, valour, and unwavering commitment will continue to inspire generations to come, leaving an enduring legacy in the history of Sri Lanka's military.

OCDS INITIATES DONATION DRIVE FOR CIVIL STAFF

Under the thoughtful coordination of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil, and with the generous support of the District Council of the Interact Club of Sri Lanka and the Maldives, essential goods parcels were distributed to the civilian staff of the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff (OCDS). This initiative exemplified a heartfelt commitment to their welfare and well-being.

A total of 30 civilian staff members of the OCDS benefited from this meaningful effort. The event was further enriched by the presence of 13 officials and student members of the Interact Club, representing St. Peter’s College Colombo, St. Anthony’s College Kandy, and Trinity College Kandy. Their active participation underscored a deep sense of solidarity and devotion to this noble cause, reflecting a shared commitment to supporting the civilian staff serving in military institutions.

The CDS highly appreciated their initiative and commended the Interact Club members and officials for their generosity and dedication. He emphasized the importance of such collaborative efforts in fostering goodwill and strengthening the bond between the military and society, encouraging continued engagement in similar noble endeavours.

PLA NAVY HOSPITAL SHIP 'PEACE ARK' HOSTS SRI LANKAN DIGNITARIES

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy hospital ship ‘Peace Ark,’ currently on a formal visit to Sri Lanka under the theme “Mission Harmony 2024,” hosted an on-deck reception for Sri Lankan dignitaries last evening (26 December). The PLA Navy ship arrived in Colombo on 21st December 2024 for a seven-day visit and was welcomed by the Sri Lanka Navy in compliance with naval traditions.

The Honourable Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa graced the evening as the Chief Guest. The Deputy Minister of Defence Major General (Retd) Aruna Jayasekara WWV RSP VSV USP ndc psc and the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, His Excellency Qi Zhenhong also honoured the evening.

At the gracious invitation of the Chinese Ambassador, the Commanders of the mission Rear Admiral Ying Hongbo and Rear Admiral He Yongmin, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil attended the grand occasion and was warmly welcomed upon arrival to the ship.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Guest, the Chinese Ambassador and the Deputy Minister of Defence, reiterated the significance of the longstanding bilateral ties, unique friendships maintained over the years, and engagements that have strengthened the bond between the two nations.

Amidst the cordial discussions, General Shavendra Silva took a moment to convey his heartfelt appreciation to the Chinese Ambassador, the mission commanders, and the dedicated crew for their goodwill exemplified through this friendly mission. Further, he underscored the profound camaraderie and enduring bonds between the armed forces of the two nations, highlighting the depth of their mutual respect and cooperation.

The evening was further distinguished by the presence of the Commanders of the Sri Lanka Navy and the Sri Lanka Air Force, along with many other esteemed dignitaries.

Concluding the formal visit, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy hospital ship ‘Peace Ark’ will depart the island on 28th December.

MAJOR GENERAL JANAKA PALLEKUMBURA ASSUMES DUTIES AS THE NEW COS OF THE OCDS

During a solemn ceremony, Major General P K W W M J S B W Pallekumbura RWP RSP ndu psc of Gajaba Regiment, the former General Officer Commanding of the 12 Infantry Division, assumed office as the Chief of Staff (COS) of the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff (OCDS) at an auspicious moment on 11 December 2024.

The new COS assumed the office succeeding Major General Nilantha Premaratne who was the former Chief of Staff at OCDS. The auspicious moment was marked by Major General Janaka Pallekumbura signing an official document, symbolizing the formal acceptance of his new responsibilities.

A distinguished assembly of Director Generals and Staff Officers of the OCDS graced the occasion, highlighting the significance of this pivotal transition. Major General Pallekumbura, the newly appointed Chief of Staff, was warmly welcomed and congratulated by the officers present.

Major General Janaka Pallekumbura joined Intake 8 of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy (KDA) in 1990. Upon commissioning as a Second Lieutenant, he was assigned to the prestigious Gajaba Regiment. He has held numerous commands, staff, and instructor appointments in various capacities throughout his illustrious military career thus far.

The senior officer earned a Master's Degree in Strategic and Resilience Studies from the prestigious Lemhannas National Defence University in Indonesia.

Further, he is a distinguished recipient of the 'Rana Wickrama Padakkama' (RWP) and 'Rana Sura Padakkama' (RSP), awarded in recognition of his extraordinary valor on the battlefield.

GRADUATION CEREMONY OF THE DSCSC HELD AT THE NELUM POKUNA

The Defence Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC) marked a momentous occasion as the student officers of Course No. 18 graduated at the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre last evening (12 December). The ceremony was graced by the presence of Honourable Deputy Minister of Defence, Major General (Retd) Aruna Jayasekara WWV RSP VSV USP ndc psc as the Chief Guest.

The Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd) WWV, RWP and two Bars, RSP and Bar, USP, MMSc (Strat Stu-China), MSc (Def Stu) in Mgt, MSc (Def & Strat Stu), fndu (China), psc was also honoured the occasion.

Under the guidance of Major General D K S K Dolage USP psc, the Commandant of DSCSC, and the members of the Board of Management, the graduation ceremony celebrated the accomplishments of 150 Tri-Service middle-grade student officers including 125 from Sri Lanka’s Tri-Forces and 25 from 12 friendly foreign nations.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil, who holds the distinction of being the first alumnus of the DSCSC to command the Sri Lanka Army and ascend to the prestigious appointment of CDS, attended the ceremony at the gracious invitation of the Commandant and was warmly welcomed upon his arrival.

Addressing the graduates, the Deputy Minister of Defence extended his congratulations and emphasized the critical importance of leveraging the knowledge and leadership skills gained during their training at the staff college to enhance decision-making in crisis situations. He highlighted that the effective application of these competencies is essential for achieving optimal outcomes in complex scenarios.

The Deputy Minister also commended the Commandant and faculty members of DSCSC for their unwavering commitment to shaping the military knowledge and leadership skills of the officers to the highest standards.

During the occasion, the CDS conveyed his admiration to the Commandant and the Directing Staff for their invaluable contributions to professionally moulding the future leaders of the armed forces of Sri Lanka and conveying a message to the armed forces of friendly foreign nations about the standards and quality of military training and education in Sri Lanka.

Distinguished guests included the Commander of the Army and the Commander of the Air Force, the Vice Chancellor of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, the Commandant of the National Defence College, past Commandants of DSCSC, diplomats, and the close relatives of the graduates, attended the ceremony to honour the officers' achievements.

The graduation and investiture ceremony not only marked an academic achievement but also stood as a testament to the dedication, commitment, and rigorous training undertaken by these officers, preparing them for pivotal roles in their military careers. This event marks a significant milestone in their professional journeys and underscores DSCSC's commitment to fostering excellence in military leadership and strategic expertise.

CDS PAYS A COURTESY VISIT TO THE DEPUTY DEFENCE MINISTER

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil, paid a customary courtesy visit to the new Deputy Defence Minister, Major General (Retd) Aruna Jayasekara WWV RSP VSV USP ndc psc, this morning (10 December 2024) at the Deputy Minister's Office.
The CDS congratulated the new Deputy Defence Minister, who worked alongside the CDS in the Army and made significant contributions, particularly during the humanitarian operations.
During the meeting, the CDS engaged in a cordial discussion with the new Deputy Minister and conveyed his best wishes for the responsibilities in his new portfolio.
Concluding the visit, the CDS, in a gesture of tradition and respect, presented a memento to the Deputy Defence Minister, commemorating his visit to his office.
